I really enjoy what lovethelight is bringing to DPC these days. I think it would be a great direction for us to move. It's fun to look back at the top ribbon winners for past years and look for themes. 2008 felt different than 2007. 2009 will feel different than 2008. I like the portrait sensibility Clair brings and also, if I may boast about a fellow Northwesterner, njsabs2323. This direction would, of course, be bad for me, but good for DPC. :)

Some of their stuff:

Here is a link to the Top 5 2007 ribbon winners. Note how color almost absolutely dominates until you get down to hotpasta who had success with monotones.

I think Claire and Jennifer both should include a PostLumie Winner ribbon with every photo they each upload.

I love their work! Consistently superb.

Yep, those two are already on my favorite photographers list. =) I love their work as well!

So you are saying we should all ask for someone else to pay our membership for us? :D

Actually I really like her stuff.

Well shoot Doc...now I am blushing. To even be mentioned along side of Claire, is an honor, but for you to mention my name is so very kind of you. Thank you, and I look forward to seeing more of Claire's work, your work, and so MANY others that I have enjoyed on this site. I have grown so much from just being here and participating in the challenge's, side tournaments, and message boards.

Wow! Thanks so much. I am definitely blushing too. I love your work and Jennifer's work and I want to point out this photo of her's as well: It is really inspiring. I have high hopes for the new year and am excited to see what you and many others create.

Doc, I feel like I am rising to a bait here because your post must surely be a deliberate, tongue-in-cheek exercise in petitio principii. But I'll rise anyway, I guess.

You are assuming that (a) DPC has a direction; (b) DPC's direction (if it has one) is defined by the ribbon winners; (c) DPC needs a new direction; (d) DPC is able to pursue a particular direction; and (e) DPC would profit from taking the direction you propose. None of these things is demonstrably true. None is likely to be so.

How do we follow your advice? Does everyone copy the style of the two photographers you cite? And does everyone have to then vote highest for those copies?

Given that this process of natural selection already exists here, and effectively defines the front page(s) of the challenge results, I can only assume that this is precisely what you have in mind. If that's the case may I remind you that one end of the bell curve does not define the whole thing?

Yes, all excellent points. DPC can't be steered per se, but success breeds style changes in the masses. One could change the direction by encouraging photogs like Clair and Jennifer to enter as often as possible as well as encouraging those with similar styles who don't enter as often to see that they could be successful. I've seen trends more than a few times on DPC. When Joey was entering grunge became popular and we'd see a number of grunge entry winners. Also when threads are started which praise such styles there is a slight psychological effect on voters who read such threads. At least I would believe there is.

I don't want people to just copy this style if it doesn't suit their own. I'm not planning on doing it; that style is almost opposite mine (being mainly very colorful with few portraits). I just think it would be a good counterbalance to the indoor studio/stock photo trend that has been most popular lately.

Langdon could steer the course by choosing challenge topics that play to this style rather than choosing "Stock - coooking" and "Stock - business" which will only encourage more of the trend we are in.

sounds like an assault on IreneM to me... hmmm...

Does this mean the Ribbon Hogs of 2007 are going to gang up on the Splash Goddess of 2008?

Is this some sort of Gotterdamerung??

Another way we see evolution is in the side challenges and their cumulative effect on what's considered worthy by the voters. For example, Lensbaby-type shots, which would have been anathema not long ago for their blur alone, are starting to show up in the top reaches of the challenges. I believe this trend got a gentle goose with the "Blur" side challenge and a major goose with the "Lensbaby" side challenge that is now ongoing.

Man, you made me wiki that. Now if you had said Ragnarok I would have been with you since I played AOE: Age of Mythology. ;)

I DID say it was a counterbalance to the style like Irene's, not a replacement. Her work certainly has value and a place at the DPC table.

Sounds more like an attempt to change the zeitgeist of the site.

Although in IreneM's case, I wouldn't mind a tiny little bit of Schadenfreude ;)

(KIDDING! (mostly))

AGREED 100%, Dr. Achoo. Now the hard part. DOING IT! :) How could anyone else turn out work that is even in the same league as Jennifer and Claire.

Note to self: Try harder. It's an official DPC goal now.

Well I guess that leaves us folks who do nto have people willing to model for us right out in the cold then. No worries, I'll just forget about my membership and long time of entry here and go find somewhere that actually embraces different styles instead of expecting conformity.

maybe people want to do more than portraits.

You know that song that goes "you gotta go your own way, go you own way ay ay ay" from the 1980s or whatever?

Everyone should listen to that.
