That fits me. Unfortunately we don't really have a party in the US that aligns with that and the Dems/Reps are too caught up in rhetoric and towing the party line to come together in the middle. I was hoping Michael Bloomberg would run for pres to give me an option to vote for. My top voting issue is the environment. I thought I was going to be satisfied with any of the three candidates left, but McCain has been slipping on the environment lately. His failure to vote on the recent energy bill that would have stripped unneeded and wasteful tax incentives from big oil and given them to alternative energy, doomed it to failure by 1 vote. //www.sierraclub.org/pressroom/releases/pr2008-02-07.asp
I started with a Pentax SLR and have since switched to Canon. Much like politics, I'm not brand loyal and want to go my own way. I'll switch again if I have a reason to.

Maybe I should move to Iceland (or are those Edinburgh politics?). |

Well, the removal of Saddam wasn't a bad thing.

On topic...
Sony - Republican (surprise!). :-) Although I do wonder how much good we could do with the billions of dollars being spent on Iraq if it was invested at home? Infrastructure (roads, bridges, etc...), jobs, healthcare, etc... |

I've always had a similar sentiment. All the political bickering in the US always struck me as to be over minutiae because both 'sides' are on the right wing of global politics, just arguing about who's more right wing or not. That's why the 'important' issues are things like gay marriage and abortion.
Because there isn't so much substance to differentiate them in terms of economic, social or foreign policies. |

It's heading towards being 'wonder how much good we could do with the trillions of dollars being spent on Iraq' if you take the long view. |

Well, here in england i'm a conservative which in this neck of the woods tends to lie to the right of the political spectrum. However, in the usa, the democrats are more akin to our conservative party as we tend to adopt a more liberal stance and have recently tended to shift towards the centre. I thinks that would probably make me a democrat if I was american!!! Those republicans are far too extreme for my liking!!! he he |

Though you do have to be careful about lumping 'America' together as one homogeneous unit. A Texan democrat makes a Californian republican look like a liberal. |

From the left, correct? Overall, isn't it fair to say that the UK is one of the most socially right-leaning states in Europe? (Aside from Poland.) Forgive me if wrong, it's just my impression. |

I shoot Sony, though I am saving up for a Nikon. Registered Republican, live in Colorado, don't know who I am voting for this year. |

Quite possibly...in fact yeah, more than likely. A lot of european nations do tend to have a socialist undertone! But like for like between the uk and us our right is far more to the centre than it is to the right!!! |

Amusing thread. Correlations may not exist or can be misleading. Watch out for stereotypes!
Person: Me -- Wife
Party: Democrat -- Republican
Once voted for: Nixon -- Nader
Camera: Nikon -- Nikon & Canon
Car: Ford Pickup -- Toyota Hybrid
Computer: Mac & Windows -- Only Mac
I don't know, maybe both of our party affiliations are mistakes!

My only problem with this thread is this one damn statement. Everyone is entitled to political opinion, but this is just a load of crap.
What the hell makes you think that the average person on the street in LA or NY is more educated than those in the middle. What the hell? Have you met any people from LA that strike you as particularly educated? Or at least more so than any other?
Hmm.. lets review the Princeton map referenced nearest me in KC; Oh, gee, when you get to the absolute poorest sections of town with a record of THE WORST public school system in the country, IT GOES COMPLETELY DEMOCRAT..... MY GOD !! Say it ain't so Joe! Hey, go to any county where the rich, supposedly educated people live, and it suddenly turns a more reddish hue. But I'm just a country bumbkin from Kansas, maybe ah dunt read dat dere map tew gud. Ah gets muh paw tuh look at it later. Seems to be more about entitlements than smarts.
The idea of liberalism being about smart vs. stupid is completely erroneous; more than that it's insulting and covered in hubris. Liberalism vs. Conservatism is about values and ideals, nothing more. Saying it's education or intelligence is practicing bigotry, period.

He never pointed out what side would have been the smarter one. Anyways, if you look at the breakdown by county, we live in a PURPLE country!

You might. I live in a red state with a blue dot and a Hispanic fringe.
Election by county (old, but still pretty much true I expect) |

That link does not show, but yup you'd be mostly red, Texas is Texas (I mean that with the utmost respect, I married a Texan)
Edit to add:The map I found 2004 by county.

I'm a Nikon shooter and have been for over two decades, but I'm sure as hell not a republican. I'm also not a democrat, as 95% of the issues I'm quite a bit "left" of either. Guess you could say I'm a working class, thinking, reading, Christian, environmentalist, anti-corporate, vegetarian. |
