This is a surprise Jeff, especially after your Best of 2006, and others.

I have gone from 3.000 to 5.59 and thought I was going to level out around 5.25, but currently have quickly sliding back towards the 4s. I can honestly say, that in 5 years of being here, I have never had a score jump around this much.

I'm trying to comment on every one I vote on (I didn't enter). So far I'm at 17 (4%). This is going to take a while.
update: 24 (6%)

That's crazy! Hang in there, Karmat.
Mine is settling into reality, but it's moved at normal patterns getting there.
I'm very happy about the performance of this shot, and will be excited if I can stay above a 6 on this one! :)

I am now creeping backwards. This really hurts because I was really proud of my shot. I must be missing something but don't know what since people aren't leaving any comments. Well, off to see if I can enter something into the FS challenge. Getting late so it doesn't look promising. |

Hi everyone! I am new and was pretty excited yesterday, being above 5.5. I even had a comment that someone voted a 10 on mine!! (I was doing a very happy dance). However, since then I have steadily been sliding down...

Do a lot of people wait to vote until closer to the end of the voting period? Or is this going to stay pretty steady around here? I was out of town on the first challenge I entered and didn't even know that we could watch our scores. It probably would have been better not knowing :-) (I am driving my husband crazy with the constant updates.)
I am excited about the challenges though. I have already learned so much just from researching to find out what DOF is. And you guys are all such amazing photographer's. I can't wait to learn more!
Thank you all! |

generally your score will sort of level out after you've gotten around 125 votes or so. it will also seem to jump around alot before you get over 100 votes. as you receive more votes the amount that each one affects your score is lessened.
good luck

Goin' for the top 20 (maybe) |

This is my first challenge entry, so I told myself that I wasn't going to worry about my score. Not! I'm constantly checking it...guess I'm hooked. My original goal was to maybe place in the top 50%. My score is currently at 6.42 with 88 votes cast so far. Maybe I will do much better than I expected.
I got a couple of nice comments from people who gave me 10's, which of course made me pretty happy...then I almost felt violated when I calculated that someone gave my photo a 1!!! |

ok ... i wanna say that shallow dof does NOT mean bokeh ... bokeh can be achieved with a wide dof and a very distant background ...
why are people submitting shots that have bokeh but are clearly not shallow dof?
having said that, my photo is mid range:

If it wasn't shallow DOF, you wouldn't see bokeh since there would be no out of focus areas. Maybe you just wanted to see shallowER? |

i agree to a point. but this is a shallow dof challenge, not a bokeh challenge.
if i photograph an animal and the background is 90 metres behind the animal, that doesn't mean it's shallow dof, even though it's easy enought to create bokeh.
well, that's my opinion.

i propose that with challenges that are technically oriented - a link to a valid definition of the term be placed in red below the description of the challenge both on the submission page and on the voting page...
for instance :
Details: Shallow depth of field is often used to isolate a subject from its surrounding environment or to make it stand out. Find a creative use of a shallow depth of field for this week's challenge.
Usefull Info: [red]Defintion of Shallow Depth of Field[/red]

why wouldn't it be?
if i shot my photo at f:8 with a distant background that was nicely out of focus - the depth of field is shallow - whether or not there was bokeh. likely if i took the same shot at f:22 the background would not be nicely out of focus and the depth of field would then be considered deep.
it has no bearing on how far away the out of focus area is from the subject - more that the out focus areas make the image better. ie: focuses the viewer on the subject by eliminating distracting BG elements through the use of shallow depth of field...
you don;t think the red ribbon winner for wildlife uses shallow depth of field? shot at f:7.1
