My DOF was tiny tiny tiny, but it hasn't helped. Last night - 6; this morning - 4.7; right now bouncing between 5.1 and 5.3 ...

My DOF really could have been deeper, but then again I am still learning. I wish I would have chosen another photo, but that's ok, I am getting a lot of great advice.

Yall are doing better then me.
This is really bad, really really bad, but it does keep going up every minute. It started out this morning at 3.0000, so i guess there is a little hope. My DOF could be a lot more shallow.

Nope. I'd rather know why someone voted me low (<5) than gave me a 5+. Higher votes mean the image connected or is well received, so critique is less likely. And while favorable commentary is appreciated, it's understanding why the image warrants a low score I'm most interested in; did it fall short technically, is there something specific that's hurting the score, does it just suck in general, etc.

Hard to legitimize scores of 4 and lower if they don't come with commentary. I try and leave as many comments as possible, hitting 35-50% of each challenge I've voted in so far (granted I've only just begun). I'll offer insight as to why a good image didn't score great ... but also why an image fell short of even a 5 vote when applicable. Seems only right.

Definitely. I'm getting way too many 2s to have zero negative comments. In fact, every comment I've received so far has been really positive. Trolls make me physically angry.

I agree, I wish people would critique the photo they are voting low for. It only makes sense, unless someone is just messing around and giving everyone a low score/

Unless something really strikes me about the shot, or have a suggestion, I generally don't get to make many comments on 5's & 6's, and don't feel obligated to do so. Now I do believe the the far ends of the scoring ranges should, and generally will comment on all 10's, 9's, 8's, 7's, 4's & 3's (rare if I leave a 3), and frankly can't remember leaving a 1 or a 2. In the recent best of 2006, that meant 280+ comments out of 700+

In a perfect world, this would be courtesy:
Vote high - please say why or what moved you
Vote low - say why or make a suggestion on improvement

I don't know the scoring algorithm, so I'm just guessing, but:

I think that there must be some sort of mean or curve averaging going on to deal with the consistently-low voters. Otherwise what's left to "compute" at the end of the challenge... the scores are already visible to members. And I've definitely noticed my scores change during computation. That may just be the removal of people who didn't hit the 20% mark, though.

He, he, sure. And they live under bridges, and give low scores to any picture they think the picture's author will think the score they're getting is lower than what they deserve if everyone where to appreciate their artistry. Or something like that :)))))

My Avg. vote has gone up since this morning. So far this is my highest scoring photo. Who knows, 8-10 years from now I might even crack 6.
