Insightful. (edit: I hope that doesn't sound sarcastic... I really do think this is a brilliant statement)

Don't let one stupid troll chase you off. Just set about proving them wrong. |
Yeah! Just ignore the stupid comments and listen to the good things that you know are true. |

You know they are right ? ;-)
But, you get similar reactions from people with those tiny P&S cameras when you break out your dSLR.
"This has got 8 megapixels and 6x digital zoom and fits in my pocket."
or "Hey, you should see the great pics my camera phone takes"

What would be more like me to say: "This lens is 58mm around, 6inches in length and is about to be inserted into your *ss"...
But, hey, that's just me... LOL

One of the things that kinda bug me but I usually don't mention at all because I'd be really rude then is getting comments like:
oh and great pictures like usual.
I think the main source of irritation there is having the quality of the photo brought up as a tacked on after thought AND being taken for granted that I somehow magically take decent photos.
It's not as bad as the "Great pictures! you must have a great camera!" - one.
Oh and another thing (I'm on a roll here) is meeting equipment obsessed photographers who talk about how they have the best equipment money can buy and pointedly bringing out all the reasons why they didn't buy the camera/lenses that you have. Grrr. Especially when they don't take that fantastic photos themselves in the first place. |

I think you would be doing something wrong in general if people were more interested in the photo than the subject matter.

Upon seeing the pictures: do you shoot digital or SLR?
hmmm, it is a digital SLR (that really confuses them),
Oh and can you fix my camera? (and be handed a point and shoot). I actually do carry extra batteries so often can "fix" their camera :-)

I'm at the zoo, taking photos of a small primate, I have my lens racked out, with the tip about 6 inches away (there was glass between us). After taking about 15 shots or so, a guy behind me with a MKII and a 70-200L IS around his neck asks me
"so, were you taking macros?"
ummm.....yea.

When someone says "your camera takes great pictures" tell them this story.
A famous photographer was invited to a woman's house for dinner. She was known far and wide for her excellent skills in the kitchen and for throwing grand dinner parties.
At one point during dinner, she leaned over and said his photos were wonderful, and that he must have a great camera. He replied that he did.
Then near the end of the meal, as everyone was patting their stomachs full of delicious food, he said, loudly, "you really do create the most delicious dishes. You must have fantastic utensils!"

It seems to be a peculiarity of photographers to get upset about this.
She (in the apocryphal sense) probably would have the best utensils and they probably do contribute to the quality of the end result.
I think this oft-repeated story smacks more about photographer's insecurities and distance from the final product than any public slight.
We engage in an art-form where the end result is in large part due to the quality of the technology used to produce it. At some point we have to get over ourselves and accept that.

It happens almost every weekend - I'm out & about, have a big black camera strung around my neck, long lens attached to that, with lens hood. A 50lb backpack strapped to my back and tripod in my hand and someone asks "Are you a photographer?"
Seriously, it happens often enough that I've learned not to laugh, but calmly smile and say 'yes'. A part of me wants to scream "no, I'm an FBI agent! Move along for your own safety" ;P

You should bat your eyes at them and say very sweetly, "Why no! Why do you ask?" and just smile at them.

For back when I used a 6MP dSLR . . .
Wedding Guest with 10MP point and shoot: "How many megapixels is your camera?"
Me (anticipating his smug reaction if I said 'six': "It's six megapixels, but I bought this camera in Europe, so these are European megapixels. They're bigger than North American megapixels. It comes to about 22 megapixels after you do the conversion from European."
Talk fast and then walk away. :) |

I'd imagine they mean are you a "pro", which carrying all of that stuff wouldn't make you such per se. Strangely enough I've never been ask if I was a photographer but rather if I worked for the newspaper. I've gotten that a few times. |

Oh, Gordon, you're no fun. Of course the quality of the camera plays a large role. But you seem to have confused this thread with "discuss how to get along well in life." I think that's over in the tips & tricks forum. ;)

I'd imagine they are just looking at it as a polite and obvious way to strike up a conversation with you. It's a fairly safe and banal start to taking an interest in you and what you are doing. Often I get asked that in terms of am I a full time or career photographer.

Okay, right enough. Well my pet peeve is 'oh, you should take a picture of '
Or look at that, take a photo, quick, take a photo, it'll be excellent. Then they get disappointed if later it isn't good and somehow it's your fault...
