I wanted to see what I could do with my DSLR

Take one (7.121) ................Take Two (6.444)

a drop 0f 0.677. That was GBP1000 well spent ;)

I took a past entry from the Something Old II challenge, an image that many liked but said they would have liked it better if I removed two buckets and a blue object at the bottom. I did just that.

Original 5.196 Triangle just under a year ago

second attempt 5.284

Not a huge jump in score and a huge drop in % but I am really pleased to see the difference and see how much I have learned in the time I have been on DPC.

Well, at least I improved my score by more than a point. Also position is better, but it was a risk, since the subject ordinarily doesn't do well with dp anyway. Here are the two images. Both are titled Shadow Play, and the original was in the Long Exposure Challenge. Why I chose this one is because I did get a few favorites from the original, and also most commentators indicated it could be improved, but nobody said that the subject was bad, so I assumed it was a good subject. Wrong again.

first was ab400 has a flash duration of 4ms
the second was the sb80dx at 1/128 power has a flash duration of 140us
delay was 4ms

New one:

Old one:

i added cards and stacked the chips. i scored better this time. a bit. my husband had a HUGE improvement in his score so that made me less happy with my little improvement. ya know, jealousy and all. lol ;)

new: old:

I prefer the old as it has more personality.
Improvement in score? about +1.3

My husband was right - just add water drops. ;)

Original........................Take 2

Score: 5.118 ......................... 5.610

An improvement of only .5, but enough to make it a personal best! :)

Edit:
This was a great challenge. Maybe this should be done annually?

Both mediocre.

Seems like plain old courtesy to link to the original image if that's the point of the challenge. It has nothing to do with intelligence. I tried to post a link in my comments section and I couldn't get it to work. Now, THAT is dumb. :)

This is my original:

4.72

and this is my "improvement":

4.296

I tried making the subject bigger and fixing the white balance. I even applied some "grunge" to the background. This is what I learned at DPC. To be honest, I think I like the original better, too...

By the way, thanks to Judi and Rikki for arguing with me. I woke up this morning with several new comments and favorites! :)

btw, Judi, I just wanted to say that even though you clearly know what you're doing, garnering a higher score for your new shot, that I actually like your original better. It conveys the point of old vs. new (I didn't even make the connection on the take 2 shot) and has a certain poignance to it, whereas the new one just has the visual interest of the hand position. I'd say it was more like a fashion shot. But that's what you get for trying to fix something that ain't broke! ;)
