"Those are beautiful photos... you used photoshop right?" or "I did these with film, none of that manipulation crap."

It always amazes me when people think that film photographers produce their image right from camera. They have no idea that there is this crazy place where you can alter almost everything in an image, a dark room.

A piece of trivia from Ansel Adams' book The Negative. Most photogs from that time frame needed to use two negatives to get the landscape and sky exposed properly, so in a lot of their work you will see the same white puffy clouds used over and over in different images.

Do you have a studio? Or, Which studio do you work for?

I get both of those questions all the time.

Wel... DO you have a studio or do you work for someone else? hehe

Niether... LOL. I don't want the expenses of a studio nor do I WANT a boss. Either of those would make me have to work a lot harder than I do :-)

I love it when people brag to you how they took a photography class in high-school for a semester 20 years ago, then try to impress you with their immense knowledge with terms like "f-speed" and "shutter-stops."

"what not to say..."

don't say anything to the photographer - you can be equally annoying by just following them around and taking pictures exactly as they did, over their shoulder if you must, even getting in the way every so often.

IS that really a film camera?

I HATE THAT ONE!!! Heard it several times.

Me too! That one is a HUGE pet peeve!!!

Saw this somewhere around here once:

Hemingway: Great pictures. What camera do you use?
Irving Penn: What typewriter do you use?

I think that sums it up pretty damn well.

While looking at badly shot wedding photos.

"______ shot these. Have you ever heard of him? He only charged $800."

I just politely say no. But want to say, "If I'd heard of him, it might mean he was good and if you had asked me beforehand you wouldn't have gotten f---ed."

"You mean to say that you're not a REAL photographer?" hehe

Ooh, another one:

Friends who ask, "Will you shoot my wedding?"

No. I am a nature photographer with little to no experience shooting (a) indoors and (b) moving subjects. I don't want your wedding to be the first time I try. I would prefer that you continue to speak to me after seeing the proofs.

I can usually be polite around the most assinine people, but this lady got to me. I was shooting Lake Champlain for a panoramic on probably the coldest day I have ever been out shooting. Cold like your fingers go numb in the time it takes to change a lens and it took me 5 minutes to screw camera to tripod because I had to stop and put hands in pockets. Should of packed it up there, but I drove a while so I stayed.
Anyway, this lady was parked next to me watching the sunset and decided to ask some questions.

\"Are you a photographer?

\"Just a hobbiest for now.\"

\"Is that film or digital?\"

\"Digital.\"

\"Can you do time lapse photography with that.\"

\"I guess I could.\"

\"Do you love working in the darkroom?\"

F*&#% darkroom. You asked if it was digital. Didn't say that, but wanted to.

Same lady, while I was changing lenses.

\"Is that to get closer or farther away?\"

\"Umm, farther.\"

\"Did you know professionals only use lenses that make stuff closer?\"

\"Really I was not aware.\"

thats when I paked up and went. I was going to wait for the sun to get in the right position, but it was f ing cold, and with this lady chewing my ear off, i had had it. The sun will set again right.

be happy that you are asked. Mother~in~law just says "cousin so and so is getting married on this day and you need to be there to take the pictures" :O

somewhere along the line i got picked to be the honerary, UNPAID, family photographer. even if they are friends of friends of the family. "Oh i got a daughter~in~law that take pictures, Ill get her to take yours for you"...well as heard as it is going to be, Im gonna be "busy" for awhile doing something unless some cash is laid down or Im asked to do it at least. I really dont mind doing it(for the experience) but to not be asked but told to be here or there just isnt right in my book.

"You're using a Pentax. Why don't you get a real camera, like (insert name of what they are holding)?"

One more take on the photog's possible response:
An amateur photographer was invited to dinner with friends and took along a few pictures to show the hostess. She looked at the photos and commented, "These are very good! You must have a good camera."

He didn't make any comment, but, as he was leaving to go home he said, "That was a really delicious meal! You must have some very good pots."

"Yes, but only if you let me do it my way. I've always wanted to shoot a wedding with a pinhole camera. I can't promise much in the way of results because I've never tried it before and even if I'm wildly successful, I'll only get about 5 or 6 images and they'll be kinda fuzzy. When are you getting married?"
