You'll notice that Simonjw's image was for 20 minutes ... he conveniently added "1237 seconds" to call attention to the length of time.

I point it out only because 30 seconds just isn't going to cut it.

Yes, the trail will be there... but only about 1/40th as long. :-)

For Jacko.

There is another one similar to this with a man. Don't know who done it though.

DrNick over at DPCFC pointed this one out to me.

After much digging I found the one I was loking for:

Go handheld for 8 sec. No access to a tripod:

Here are a few more;

What's that second lens? The 50mm 1.8 II?

Nope, it was the kit 18-55mm lens @ 18mm f22. Must have been a bright day!

Here's my long exposure picture. I think it was 30 seconds. I think this will be a fun challenge, both to try to take a great picture, and to vote on it. I love these kinds of pictures!

100% agree! Seems like it could almost be done completely in the firmware. At least a option for setting a longer TV value than 30 seconds.

What about a full program mode where you say take x pictures y seconds apart for z elapsed time with mirror locked :-)

But then you wouldn't pay more money for the electronic release.......

I can't believe no one posted this one from imagineer

My latest long exposure:

used the bulb setting and then formatted my flash card (didn't save the original onto the hardrive) so I have no clue how long the exposure was...Probably around 5-8seconds, that was what I did the most of that night.

In my opinion there are mainly 2 methods of long exposure. The loose and the steady.

The lose being handheld for a rather short time say in the range of 1/20 to 5 seconds. Usually using camera movement following a subject or using light to paint the picture.

The steady where the camera is still by using a tripod or other means. This usually has some steady parts of the image where subject movement or light creates blur or lines.

I think that there is more room for creativity in the loose method, perhaps because I have experimented more that way.

I wonder if DPC voters generally think that a exposure less than a second is long?

Here are some examples:

Loose:
1/5 1/6 1/6 1/10 4 sec

Steady:
10 sec 4,5 sec 30 sec

I think there is room for both (loose and steady) in this challenge. As for what is a "Long Exposure" that depends on your definition of "normal". The challenge description states: Use a longer than normal exposure to create the impact of your image.

There should be a nice range of entries in this challenge. I look forward to seeing them.

I think there's also a third option that I believe has already been mentioned. It has to do with producing a high key image by using an exposure longer than would be normal for 'correct' exposure.

Check out Breaking Rule #3. Though not the best subject, it does present something for further experimentation. It is not clear what the object in the image is (rocks with waterfall on left) however to me it looks like two faces, one leaning over the other.
