Challenge: Shapes (Advanced Editing I*)
Camera: Sony DSC-F717
Location: Epping Forest
Date: Dec 5, 2003
Aperture: f2.0
ISO: 100
Shutter: 30 secs
Galleries: Abstract, Landscape
Date Uploaded: Dec 5, 2003

This image came almost as-is out of the camera.

Shot from a tripod during a self-timed, 30 second exposure, I sprinted around the forest holding a colour-changing flashlight.

The trees were illuminated only by strong moonlight.

Post-processing included subtle shadow/highlight filter and dodge and burn in Photoshop CS to enhance contrast and definition, while lifting the background to create a more surreal level of ambient light.

This is absolutely amazing. I love it. The colors are fantastic. I think if you turned off the lights, hung it on the wall and looked, it would be glowing. Really a great one.

Greetings from the Critique Club:
This image has an almost Disney quality with the "fireflies" and the strong trunks leaning toward each other. One can almost hear them speaking. The wave effect of the top of the light streaks is very nice. When I first looked at this image I found it a bit busy and I wonder if you thought of the smallest imaginable crop at the bottom to take away a third or half of the puddle of blue but not enough to lose any of the right hand trunk. I also wonder if you might want to rethink how much of the sky you want in this...it might tighten up and have even more punch with a top crop as well as one at the bottom. This is a very interesting image and one which you could play with for a long time I think, it all comes down to what you wish to present. What you gave to the challenge was very fine, thanks.

Excellent. If this is done by a subject running around with a light (as opposed to simply adding it with PS) , it's a great idea. Jacko. 8

The more I look at it the more I like it... At first I thought it didn't fit the challenge as well as it could, but actually the frozen "shape" of the "fireflies" in front of the cool looking background is really great. I think I would have removed a little of the Magenta/Cyan from it. Good job!

Interesting technique. Did you apply this in post editing, or was it part of your original photo technique?
