I commented on 50 pics - 20%. Takes a lot of time to write something meaningful. It is more interesting to say something funny, too. At least it amuses me.
As it is not realistic to comment on all the pics, is it better to comment on pics that are great (ie compliment them), pics that are dire (desperately need some advice) or mid-level pics (have genuine need of advice on why their pic is not quite as good as someone else's - the kind of stuff that you cannot see yourself, to people who know the basics and stand the best chance of improving in the short term).
I currently have a bit of a scattergun approach. Not that I am really qualified to say what is great (other than being interested and probably a better critic than photographer).

I'm unsure what you've left out, here.
My stats? You have rated 21 of 251 images (8%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 20 images (8%) in this challenge.
(Obviously, I'm taking my own sweet time.) |

Stats: You have rated 250 of 251 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 27 images (11%) in this challenge.
And trying hard to comment on some more.
As for the comments I've received, so far I had 3: 1 useful and 2 that say "meh" and "nah". Why even bother to leave comments like these? |

Well....at least you have comments. I have zero, none, nada! Must be my image is not great, dire or mid-level. :) |

I know my picture isn't that outstanding, but I was expecting a bit higher score than what I'm getting now. I have exactly 1 comment on it, and really wish I had some more feedback from those giving me 1s 2s, and 3s, which from watching my score, I can tell I have several. Yeah, there's some technical problems that I was having with the computer (image went from crisp to blur-like when lowering to fit 150k), but I thought some good elements in the photo would have outweighed some of the bad. I'd like to hear some feedback on why it's not, and with scores lower across the bored for this challenge, as they appear to be, I'm betting on the fact that there's a lot of others out there wondering what's so gosh-awful about theirs, as well.

That "meh" I think was from me. As for the reason why, see my previous post. I started to comment and just got, I don't know, uninspired. I appologize for that and will try to correct it.
As for my stats:
Stats: You have rated 250 of 251 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 47 images (19%) in this challenge.
I've rated both my 10's, all my 9's, and all but 4 of my 8's. It sort of goes downhill from there.
Comments recieved: 1.

Why do I torture myself by continuously checking my score? I don't think it has varied more than .1 since voting started. I have found myself giving more middle of the road scores this time around. Very few photos have really jumped out at me. |

My definition of a snapshot is - (others may differ)
there is no focus or subject
poorly composed or skewed POV that hinders a image
people looking in diffent directions without explination
(incl blinks & half blinks & redeye)
to much headroom or head/feet cut off
the subject in the center of the image taking up 10% of the picture
blurry or smugged
backs and or butts and or backs of heads
no saturation whatsover / muddy looking
basicly describing every image that my mother has ever taken ;)
things I do to prevent snapshots (hmmm.. when i remember)
SLOW DOWN
imagine the image priour to taking the picture (when there is time )
double check focus / subject /settings
(doh!! still on 1600ISO, auto focus was off, etc )
and SLOW DOWN breath deep & take a picture ....

Gosh, I guess this will do better than I thought in such a low scoring challenge. I'm sure the higher scores are staying quiet.....where are you!?

well, my pic doesnt fit any of those..but I still get comment that it is a snapshot and evidently that means this person scored it low....

ps..I would tell why I think they said that, but then I might give away my pic...so after challenge over...

You have commented on 113 images (45%) in this challenge.
this is exhausting.
i'm having trouble commenting on low rated photos. i think what i'm going to start doing, and i recommend to everyone as well, is to vote on all the photos then come back and comment. comment on your lowest rated photos first since those are the users that most likely need the help. it would be nice to hear if your photo was outstanding, but i think it would be better if people told you what could be done to improve instead.

I totally agree. And I hope more people follow up on your idea. I'm going to try and leave more comments for the lower scores too, and not be dissuaded by the "defensive" responses I've received on some of comments I've left!
I know it really helps to "step back" from my own photos and try to look at them in a more objective light. I've got a long, long way to go to bring my own pictures up to a higher standard. |

I'm having the same problem. My original was clear, but I'm taking hits for lack of clarity/focus. Not that it was the best pic ever anyways, I just tried to put in a candid that I thought captured boredom. Oh well.

Once I have completed voting on all the images, I tally my scores and I am normally in the 5.25 to 5.5 range. However, with this challenge I have found that due to the sheer volume of uninspiring photos I have looked at, I barely eeked out an average of 5.
I will in all likelyhood re-visit each of the images I scored 5 or lower and determine whether or not they may have fallen victim to a "Bad Hair Day" |

Hey, I think we tied ;) I know I was definitely bored when I took my entry shot, apparently others didn't agree--this one is definitely a lesson learned! |

And there in may lie the problem. If you are bored while composing your photo, it's likely that your viewers will also be bored by it. The object was to convey boredom without being boring.
That said, I apparently am in league with you. (Though I was far from bored at the time.) My photo is soooooo boring there are 0 comments for the more than 200 votes received. (I'm actually hoping I get no comments before the challenge ends as that would be a new thing for me.) |

Right on Kadi, the photo itself is not bad (It's not great, but it's not bad), it just wasn't fitting for the entry, and literally a last minute submission. I should have sat this one out! |

Its raining and I'm sick. Didn't enter this one, just couldnt capture boredom I guess. So I'm trying to vote and comment on everyone in this challenge. I use the spirit of the challenge as a starting point,(very subjective part) than go to the technical side than personal appeal. I rarely give out 1-3's, but you need to be there in my opinion to get 8-10's. With that all said, Its just my opinion and maybe off base with the norm some times. Ha...The Eye of the be Holder......
Good Luck.....ace |

Damn! I'm too late! I was going to tell you when you get to the zoo photos to skip mine (so I could maintain my goose egg for comments)! But you got me. Thanks. (By the way, what are you taking for your illness, does it improve your mood? You were very kind.) |
