Well, it is a boring challenge. Most unusual scoring; with 209 votes I have 10 positive comments and a very low score of about 4.5! Weird.

Damn! I'm too late! I was going to tell you when you get to the zoo photos to skip mine (so I could maintain my goose egg for comments)! But you got me. Thanks. (By the way, what are you taking for your illness, does it improve your mood? You were very kind.) [/quote]

Take a look at my pain challenge add some cold meds...wow....lol
I have no problems with animal, abstract other forms of shots...To me this is was a tough challenge. So I'm leaning litte more on the technical side and appeal. This is tough in it self to really take the time to look closely at the entries and comment on all. I'm at about 40% so far. Not going anywhere, its little more than a cold. I hope to take a second run after voting, I like to bump scores, hopefully up..lol.........ace

Still hovering at a 6...

Interesting though, out of the 20 comments on my image -
one voter gave me a 10 for a certain element in my photo
another dropped my score down due to the same element in my photo

- and that's exactly why I shoot what I like, what pleases MY eye lol

Yup, my hubby's pic that he entered has just over 4.5 score and 6 quite positive comments. LOL
03/26/2005 05:11:38 PM · #130
I took a chance with this one and tried something very different than what I usually do. I actually have about 14 very negative comments, some of which don't help me in improving at all, but I'm hovering around a 4.9, so it can't be all that bad.

I'm not sure if this is encouraging me to take chances with the challenges or not.

Wow, that was work. I commented on all but one image, I'll go through tomorrow and find it as I take a second look. To much work to do in a normal day. But I'd enjoyed it......Good Luck to All !!!!!!

Your current submission photo should be in the left hand column under the heading - My submission.

The photo is updated every hour, Members have the added feature of an update buttom, which when selected does what it says on the tin.....

For the animal shots, it was hard to distinguish sleep from boredom. If it couldn't communicate the emotion or the idea, then I gave it a 3 and below.

On the contrary, I think the boredom topic encouraged people to think outside the box and move beyond the "subject with face on chin". Unfortunately everyone that tried thought of the same thing (watching paint dry, watching grass grow, twiddling thumbs, etc).

A late Bored entry, titled "Just Watching The Cars" (a little too dark)

Any thoughts? Look familiar? Out of the box?

Is the photo interesting or striking to me?
Yes +1-2
No +0

Is the Title clever or add additional meaning to the photo?
Yes +1
No +0

So... is what you are saying is that a picture of the highest technical photographic quality and is the most interesting it can be which does not meet the challenge can, at best, only match a picture with a clever title that is out-of-focus, poorly conceived and has no redeeming photographic qualities whatsoever?

Uh, Oh... I think I hear the meet-the-challenge police coming to haul me off to... Oh, NO... Cleveland? :)

NOTE:
This posting is a light hearted attempt to point out that the site's intent is to promote interest in photography and help improve people's photographic skills. The Surgeon General has determined that no police or cities named Cleveland were harmed during the writing of this post.

Nice photo, could be a lot better with some burning/dodging. I was contemplating a similar entry with this sculpture

but did not get around to properly re-shoot it, so went ahead with a different idea

That "was" my base for scoring this challenge. My voting continues to "evolve" as I explore more on this site and vote on more entries. These numbers are not concrete, just starting points. I have already begun changing my voting criteria and have gone through this challenge and modified many of my scores and comments. I do believe however, that meeting the challenge is a large part of the critique. Capturing the the image the client is looking for is indeed part of the art. Although the photo is of the highest quality and interest, the client may be forced to go with a less skillful photographer who can deliver the requested subject material. That is not to say that the client won't buy the first photographers work to hang in his home.

This is a photo I almost submitted for the contest. I would have called it "Deflated". What do you all think?
03/28/2005 11:45:42 AM · #147
I am new to dpchallenge although I have viewed the site many times.

I think the subject of this chellenge can be viewed from three points of views. (1)...the bored photographer (2) the bored subjected (3) the bored photographer who is photographing a boring subject.

Frankly I think "Bored photographers" and "bored photographers who photograph boring subjects" were the main thrust of enteries to this challenge. I found it very hard to fill the 20% requirement for my vote to register because I was bored looking at animal shoots and images that didn't seem to hit the mark subject wise. I walked away from my computer with one pressing question to be answered...Are the animals bored or am I.

Don't get me wrong most of the images were okay, but I don't think they landed on the very abstract subject matter of the challenge.

Barry, with that said, were there any that you did like and thought hit the mark?

I kinda rushed that photo only to throw it up as a joke. A little poke at the "hand on cheek" posing thing.

Big problem, I know how to dodge and burn but I can't actually do it. I also don't know where to use it effectively. My hand is so incredibly unsteady with the mouse that PS work annoys me. I'd probably do much better in the Challenges if my PS skills were up do snuff. I also seem to see immediately noticeable downgrades in photo quality when I simply to contrast/color/curves/Hue/saturation correction so D and B seems like another thing to muck up my shots with. Oh, and my RAW PS plug-in doesn't work.

I like it! Probably would crop to right above the fence, but I guess you need the net for context with the flat b-ball.

This is the hardest challenge to slog through and vote, and I gave more comments to low-rated images where I thought I had something to offer the shooters.

I entered an animal shot that must be somewhat less painful than others, almost all positive comments, though it seems many looked and didn't vote (yet). Animals can be useful for anthropomorphistic emotional portrayal...and I'm an animal photographer the way so many here are studio photographers, or the way you've got the photojournalistic perspective.

Went looking at my statistical-favorite photos, and almost all of them were from when I joined in 2002. And those old ones would not have gotten 9s and 10s from me now, not even close. Funny how that works. I haven't entered a lot of challenges here, have voted a lot more than I've entered.
