All the comments were good. Thanks everyone!

Woo hoo finaly I managed to get through a challenge without the "photo is to soft" comment. I actualy managed to get a "photo looks too sharp". All positive comments other than that as well.. Now if only I could figure out why with 6 positive comments my score is so low. This is my second lowest ever.

Yes! Great coinage! I'm trying to work it into a sentence....give me some moments.

(Meanwhile, why doesn't "onomatopoeia" sound like what it means?)

I have always wanted to coin a word. Now's my chance.

You all know the word onomatopoeia meaning a word that sounds like it's meaning. Examples: Buzz, moan, crack.

How about a photo that looks like its DPC Challenge? If the challenge was "Exciting," the photo would be exciting to look at. More to the point, if the the challenge was "Bored," the photos would be boring to look at. I suggest that is exactly what's happening in the "Bored" challenge. Although there are some good counter examples ... exceptions that prove the rule.

And now I hereby coin the new word photomatopoeia to describe the phenomenon.

I like it! Probably would crop to right above the fence, but I guess you need the net for context with the flat b-ball.

This is the hardest challenge to slog through and vote, and I gave more comments to low-rated images where I thought I had something to offer the shooters.

I entered an animal shot that must be somewhat less painful than others, almost all positive comments, though it seems many looked and didn't vote (yet). Animals can be useful for anthropomorphistic emotional portrayal...and I'm an animal photographer the way so many here are studio photographers, or the way you've got the photojournalistic perspective.

Went looking at my statistical-favorite photos, and almost all of them were from when I joined in 2002. And those old ones would not have gotten 9s and 10s from me now, not even close. Funny how that works. I haven't entered a lot of challenges here, have voted a lot more than I've entered.

Nice photo, could be a lot better with some burning/dodging. I was contemplating a similar entry with this sculpture

but did not get around to properly re-shoot it, so went ahead with a different idea

I kinda rushed that photo only to throw it up as a joke. A little poke at the "hand on cheek" posing thing.

Big problem, I know how to dodge and burn but I can't actually do it. I also don't know where to use it effectively. My hand is so incredibly unsteady with the mouse that PS work annoys me. I'd probably do much better in the Challenges if my PS skills were up do snuff. I also seem to see immediately noticeable downgrades in photo quality when I simply to contrast/color/curves/Hue/saturation correction so D and B seems like another thing to muck up my shots with. Oh, and my RAW PS plug-in doesn't work.

Barry, with that said, were there any that you did like and thought hit the mark?

Frankly I think "Bored photographers" and "bored photographers who photograph boring subjects" were the main thrust of enteries to this challenge. I found it very hard to fill the 20% requirement for my vote to register because I was bored looking at animal shoots and images that didn't seem to hit the mark subject wise. I walked away from my computer with one pressing question to be answered...Are the animals bored or am I.

Don't get me wrong most of the images were okay, but I don't think they landed on the very abstract subject matter of the challenge.
I do believe however, that meeting the challenge is a large part of the critique. Capturing the the image the client is looking for is indeed part of the art. Although the photo is of the highest quality and interest, the client may be forced to go with a less skillful photographer who can deliver the requested subject material. That is not to say that the client won't buy the first photographers work to hang in his home.
You're name says it all!!! 2shay!!!! (Couldn't remember how to spell it correctly! lol)

That "was" my base for scoring this challenge. My voting continues to "evolve" as I explore more on this site and vote on more entries. These numbers are not concrete, just starting points. I have already begun changing my voting criteria and have gone through this challenge and modified many of my scores and comments. Uh, Oh... I think I hear the meet-the-challenge police coming to haul me off to... Oh, NO... Cleveland? :)

NOTE:
This posting is a light hearted attempt to point out that the site's intent is to promote interest in photography and help improve people's photographic skills. The Surgeon General has determined that no police or cities named Cleveland were harmed during the writing of this post.

I was gonna vote in this challenge but after reviewing the images I was just bored to tears.
03/27/2005 03:06:01 PM · #23
For the animal shots, it was hard to distinguish sleep from boredom. If it couldn't communicate the emotion or the idea, then I gave it a 3 and below.

On the contrary, I think the boredom topic encouraged people to think outside the box and move beyond the "subject with face on chin". Unfortunately everyone that tried thought of the same thing (watching paint dry, watching grass grow, twiddling thumbs, etc).
