Exactly. Not a 1, 2, 3 or 4, which is what they were given.

You just agreed with me. My point was that a shot shouldn't have to be a greeting card to score well.

What do you view the purpose of the site to be?

I did just that. See my Best of 04 entry. The voters deemed it just barely above average.

What if the people that vote a picture a 1 or a 2 should be required to leave a comment as to why it should be voted so low.

But in my opinion that's an absolutely stunning image of a place/time/event, and deserves better than it got.
Comment: "The more Iook at this, the more Ilike it. The single face just to the right of center, looking at the camera, makes the picture. Without it, it's basically a blah show. But it's there, and everything in the picture revolves around this indvidual. Beautifully done. I suspect you weren't sure about submitting this one, and I'm glad you did."

Thank you... the way i see things though is not trying to please the voters, rather doing it for yourself. The scores really don't mean that much but hey, it'd be nice to get a ribbon. Anyway, its the comments that are worth MUCH more than votes. Without the comments this would just be an ordinary photo site. Thank you to the voters and most especially to the ones that left a comment on my entry. Much obliged. |

BAMartin, I dedicate to you my humble 171st place for 'rain dance'. How can I ever believe my ducky was the better pic... Sorry it's not a higher placing, but that's what I have.

Voters, scores, 1's and 10's have been beat up, but we all easily forget this was a challenge of personal choice.
What was great or important to one person, may not have been to another and so on. A parent can look at their child and beam with pride of how beautiful their child is, while the rest of the world says ugly kid. This challenge was no different really.
This challenge was beauty in the eye of the beholder and no one had to prove anything to anyone but themselves, and for that I thank the members that entered according to their heart.
What a superb collection of pride, color & emotion.

I feel like the size of the challenge was a problem. Voters (myself included) were completely overwhelmed by the number of entries. Trying to vote was an enormous undertaking. I imagine a lot of people voted images on the low side, giving room for the "wow" shots they hadn't yet seen. But two... three... four hundred images later the thought of going back to readjust all those votes to something more fair is just too much.
I've been disappointed by the bigger challenges. I've been more frustrated by my score, received hardly any comments, and was exhausted by voting and commenting on others in turn. The smaller challenges, on the other hand, have been lots of fun. I learned a lot more participating in those.
I don't know if there's anything that can be done about limiting entries in a fair way. It's great this site is so popular -- it's a great concept and run really well. But will there ever be a limit? Over 500 entries in one contest was a bit ridiculous imo. |

Here are my 10's from the challenge. Just for the fun of posting them. I gave a lot of really high scores and I'm surprised with so many of the results. I think it would be interesting to have the prize for a certain challenge be that only that person could vote on the images in the next challenge and they had to put them all in order. On second thought, that would be really hard. lol

Whew, that took forever! I gave a lot of 10's. I gave an abundance of other high scores. I think my average for this challenge was somewhere around 6.5

I'm frequently confused by the way people vote here, but there's just no accounting for tastes or people's methods of scoring. I did fairly well (way better than I thought I would) in the Best of '04 challenge, but only grabbed 2 favourites... because while the photo's alright, it's pretty generic. Not too many people hated it, but nobody really loves it because it lacks the individuality that causes strong reactions.
In my opinion, the really successful photographs are the ones that people react strongly to, one way or another. I'm most proud of those, anyway. They often don't score very well, but they're the real spice of DPC, I think, and a lot of those - the abstracts, the strong contrast b&w candids, the brightly coloured over-the-top "wow" shots - tend to shine in the favourites, if not in the top 10 scoring lists.

Why should I check the forums EVERYTIME I think of a new idea? I hate this response and get sick of hearing it. From Site Council or not I just gets annoying. I shouldnt have to check the forums everytime I want to say something.
