Street Child and his Dogsby andrewmComment: Thank you for all your kind comments on my picture—there is a story behind this photo and I thought you might be interested in it. I first saw this Street child about three weeks ago while I was in the car waiting for my wife—so I had lots of time to study him and the group he was with—about 4 adults and 2 children. They sleep literally on the pavement and store their mattresses and blankets in a portable garbage bin with wheels on. They wash in a house –sort of a squat filled with Nigerian and Congolese refugees—but for a squat it looks good and clean—and the street is clean. I was stunned when the boy got a cigarette and started smoking it while playing with his skateboard and with the white dog. By this time I was cursing that I didn’t have my camera and I was determined to return. This I did and I started chatting to him and gave him some money for a photo—this is my first and I think my best one. About a week later the Challenge was photo-journalism and I thought I just had to get a picture of the little guy. They were all still there and another dog so I paid him money to pose for me and the brown dog insisted on sitting in with us—he would not be budged—I was warned that if I tried to move him he would bite me! That is why the brown dog is in the photo and why it was such a difficult crop and composition. The boy? his future seems fairly bleak. If you ask him if he is happy—yes he is—he has a great time skateboarding and playing—how long that lasts and he starts begging I don’t know—he is not at school and will get no education—but he is a bright boy and if someone took him under their wing he would turn out well or have a chance—I found it quite a sobering and worrying encounter. |

Planned Parenthood Protestby psychephylaxComment: Andrewm Critique Club I enjoy the composition of your picture—it is unusual but it works. ones eye seems to be led around in a square reading the signs and I find that I go back to the focal point which is the woman’s face.Having said that I think this works in the context of this challenge—it is a very newspaper image-packed with information so that the copywriters don’t have to do much work! In the background the spikey fence fits well into the image of an angry protester. Your photo seems well exposed although I notice criticisms of overexposure—but I think you may have oversaturated the colour or used levels too much or used a small part of the picture –blown up-- because there are chromatic aberrations all over the photo-in the leaves along the sign and these may be exacerbated by the over saturation. However I think the strength of your subject – the owl like spectacles peering defiantly from a white face enveloped in a black anorak – This is an image that the viewer remembers for a long time. |
