Thank you for all your kind comments on my picture—there is a story behind this photo and I thought you might be interested in it. I first saw this Street child about three weeks ago while I was in the car waiting for my wife—so I had lots of time to study him and the group he was with—about 4 adults and 2 children. They sleep literally on the pavement and store their mattresses and blankets in a portable garbage bin with wheels on. They wash in a house –sort of a squat filled with Nigerian and Congolese refugees—but for a squat it looks good and clean—and the street is clean. I was stunned when the boy got a cigarette and started smoking it while playing with his skateboard and with the white dog. By this time I was cursing that I didn’t have my camera and I was determined to return. This I did and I started chatting to him and gave him some money for a photo—this is my first and I think my best one. About a week later the Challenge was photo-journalism and I thought I just had to get a picture of the little guy. They were all still there and another dog so I paid him money to pose for me and the brown dog insisted on sitting in with us—he would not be budged—I was warned that if I tried to move him he would bite me! That is why the brown dog is in the photo and why it was such a difficult crop and composition. The boy? his future seems fairly bleak. If you ask him if he is happy—yes he is—he has a great time skateboarding and playing—how long that lasts and he starts begging I don’t know—he is not at school and will get no education—but he is a bright boy and if someone took him under their wing he would turn out well or have a chance—I found it quite a sobering and worrying encounter.

Critique club:
1) COMPOSITION -CONTENT - I would have focused more on the child, the brown dog is appearing as the focal point of the image. I wonder what the image would have looked like if composed from the left hand side?
(2) BACKGROUND - A very neutral background which neither adds to or subtracts from the main image
(3) CAMERA WORK -TECHNICAL - I feel that the most in focus part of the image is the piece of wall behind the brown dog perhaps the camera locked on to this point

(4) DIGITAL PROCESSING - TECHNICAL - The image has been processed correctly, although perhaps needed some unsharp mask applied after resizing!

(5) YOUR OPINION ON THE PHOTO -Thishave more emotional impact if I didn't get the impression that the child is to clean and the dogs too well fed!
It would be a topical story, for a real photojournalism article that makes a statement, about the plight of the street children of South Africa . I feel this idea had all the components to be a wow image but didn't quite make it! I voted it an eight in the challenge

really like this photo...the way you are showing this kid's connection to his dogs works beautifully...something odd with the way you framed it though :)

Really lovely picture. The dog on the right spoils it for me though, woulda looked great as a portrait format concentrating on the kids face looking at the little dog on his lap.

I like this one but I don´t think it´s a streetboy and his dogs more like a streetboy and his dog. Because the dog at right is probably not a streetdog. Never mind - that´s what made the photo interesting for me. And worth high score. /carsten

Probably a lie. Kid and dogs look too well cared for. But the photo is on topic. Good photo. Would have killed it if any of the subjects were looking at the camera. Que magnifico. Siete.

Good photo. Technicaly well done. Perhaps a little more space (wall) to the right would have changed the mood some. 8

Very touching. but the dogs look well taken care of which leads me to believe that these dogs are his pets and that his parents are either neglectng him or he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I think the fact that the dog looks cleaner than the boy adds a lot of impact to this
