I'm still very new on photoshop as well but I think you've done a fantastic job editing it, especially comparing it to the original. One of the first things I learnt was levels (Ctrl + L) and you can darken/lighten the blacks, the midtones and the higlights. I think it's great IMO.

As for improvements that I could spot, would be maybe sharpening it a bit and adding a bit more contrast but I'm still a noob so listen to some more people as well.

I really really like this. Just the right amount of contrast and the shadows show it off really well. The reflections in the picture frames are great and the light is just bright enough that it looks perfect in b&w.

Even with your troubles in capturing, you've done an excellent job! Like how it's off centre and so clear. Shame it's a tad soft but what can you expect shooting handheld. Overall great job IMO!

This almost looks like poster for a horror movie! Really nice border and the sharpness and DOF is spot on. The different view of him also adds a uniqueness about it.
