Challenge: Free Study 2011-08 (Advanced Editing VII)
Collection: Challenges
Camera: Canon EOS-5D
Lens: Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0L IS
Location: Harwich Port, MA
Date: Aug 2, 2011
Aperture: f/8
ISO: 1600
Shutter: 12 sec
Date Uploaded: Aug 30, 2011

12 seconds, hand-held, on the way home from Boston, just before all hell broke loose... Amazing lack of noise for ISO 1600... 800 pixels can't begin to do justice to the level of detail in the lightning.

See full-size version here:

Look close and see the double horizon and shoreline details. There were two lightning flashes, one high and to the right and the other the main one, so the scene was lit twice and the camera moved a little too.

Fantastic light - and lightning! I'm guessing the lightning provided most of the light on the scene, while the other part of 12 seconds it was too dark and the camera shake isn't too visible... Handheld natural flash photography? :).
Congrats on the top 10, stunning image! Like Ursula, I love the visible shake on the green light.

Beautiful, Robert! It looks fantastic big. I think it is cool how in the big version you can see the slight shake of the camera (on the green light at middle left), it makes the whole thing very real to me. I love the colours too.

Woah! Beautiful composition and perfect exposure! Very angry and sinister clouds unleashing their master weapon! Delightful! Wish you'd used a border that's less bold or no border at all on this one.
