One picture. So it will fail in an expert edit challenge. I like it though and my intention is to point out that available freshwater is quickly being reduced and that we shouldn't take it for granted.

First the wife was annoyed at me paying $20 for a fish just for a challenge. Then she was upset that I put it; bleeding; in our new Korean bath-stone bathroom sink. Sheesh - can't get a break. :P

Post challenge:
I'm speechless. I was really surprised to see how well it did. The processing would have been basic, but I decided last minute to use one layer in order to make the fish stand out a little more.
Thank you so much everyone for all the nice comments and votes.
The fish is a red snapper from New Zealand in case anyone is wondering :) I propped its mouth open with a tooth pick below the mouth so I didn't have to clone it out.

And yes: We did have the fish for dinner. Cut head and tail off. Made two slices through the skin on each side (to avoid curling) and fried in butter with salt, pepper and lemon. Yummy!! :)

I like this comment. I have a buddy who ragged on this challenge all week. He complained about all the editing. In a challenge like this, I like the fact that they have so many different kinds of photos.

I like the expert editing challenges. It gives you a chance to do things you wouldn't normally do on DPC !

I have to say I disagree with all the comments saying it's the victory of "photography" against "digital art", or whatever people call things. I don't see the point of opposing type of pictures, processing styles, photographers visions, etc. It's not a war! ;-)
Editing is a tool, just a tool. It can be indispensable, or close to useless, depending on the creation and what is needed to achieve it. Your idea just worked outstandingly that way, and it also appeared to be the best of the challenge, so you won, that's basically it :-)
Congratulations again!

From your comments it looks like you were going for the reduction in available water in the world. However, when I saw it, I thought you were going for the theme that I was going for in my DQ entry....making light of all the water drop photos on DPC. I wonder how many others thought the same?

Good job. I gave this an 8.

I agree, Christophe. My point was against people who have claimed that basic photography does not stand a fair chance against advanced digital editing techniques. My point is that it is MUCH more about the idea and the execution, regardless of how you get there.

Congrats again to both of you!

Nice. Congrats! Clever, funny shot.

But next time throw an article (the) in between "first" and "wife". When you said "First wife thought" I thought you had gone through divorce proceedings during the shoot. :D

Very creative, and nicely captured. It sticks out even as a thumbnail and is one of those images you might expect to see somewhere on a non-DPC website someday!

I usually am not a fan of some of the stuff that places high in expert editing challenges. To me, they are not so much photographs as they are graphic creations (not to say they aren't well done....for what they are).

It's good to see an actual photograph (apparently with not a ton of editing) win an challenge against the creations.

Congrats on your win and great score, good to see an "advanced editing" image (and such an excellent one to boot) wins this challenge. Goes to show that most of the "expert" images are way overdone and a good idea accomplished with good technicals is what really makes an outstanding shot.

06/10/2011 06:49:10 AM
A hardy congrats on the win with this shot. This clearly met the challenge the best as having not been seen here before and you did not rely on fancy dancy editing to wow us. Well done!
