As you guessed, it was much fun shooting this one. First, I made some quick tries at home, just to get a rough idea of the framing and angle that I wanted. Then, my wife and I traveled to the beach, on a spot I located using "The Photographer's Ephemeris": it is a handy little piece of software, based on Google Maps, that also gives you the position of the sun and the moon for any day of the year. It really helped me planning the lighting: for example, I knew a reflector would be necessary, to compensate for the high harsh sun.

Once there, we did some test shots without digging the sand, and after a few tries, we started using our shovels! At this point, walkers' faces became funny. But that was nothing compared to when I undressed myself, got down in the hole with the cap and glasses :-) My wife then kindly buried me... and we shot many photos, to be able to select the one with the most convincing position.
All in all, a very nice day at the beach!

As always, thank you all for your great comments and votes, they are extremely appreciated.

It's a wonderfully creative idea and a brilliantly executed image. Congratz with a well deserved Blue. Just one little observation. You should have also mulled/roughed up the sand from behind your feet to the waters edge and also roughed up the sand on your back and around your head and chest to create an even stronger and more convincing impression that you just swam up the beach.

The compo is what makes this work so well for the challenge. The viewer doesn't really realize that the horizon is tiltled making this a very awesome image! Congrats again!

Finally getting around to congratulating people -- I was out of town for a week, and just dabbling here and there.

Awesome shot! Incredibly well done! You must not have buried yourself too deep. I tried burying my husband

but the problem was I put too much sand on him, and he found it difficult to breathe! I was so nervous, I forgot to change angles and experiment with the shot. :)

Great idea, wonderful -- as always!! Huge congrats!

I like this - its not at all *about* tilted horizon but uses tilted horizon to make the picutre, neat.

Congrats on a great shot and the well deserved blue.
