So I kept going back and forth between this image and .

I realize that the arm is blurred, but I thought the expressions were better, and that the blur added to the sense of movement -- of kicking, where the other one looked more like the setup shot it was.

I'm surprised how hard people are on motion blur. I was afraid that it would be the case, but I really thought this was the better picture. Unfortunately, I think the other picture would have scored much higher. For how low some of the votes are, it looks like people take off multiple points for a bit of blur.

It's interesting -- it will make me look a little harder at blur in other people's photos, to see whether it adds, detracts, or really doesn't make a difference. I'm wondering whether I've been critical of blur in the past (though not multiples of points), when it really doesn't make a difference to the photo or even adds a sense of movement.

That's what is great about DPC -- the things that we learn as we go along. :)

This has been bouncing up and down quite a bit. It'll be interesting to see where it ends.

Edited to add: I'm also surprised at how many people completely ignore a little blur -- a very happy number of 8s in this challenge. It's quite an eye opener. I still probably made the wrong choice, however.

btw -- we brought shovels for this challenge! My poor husband was finding sand for the next 3 days! We had less than 20 minutes to carry this one off. I should have switched angles, etc, but he said the sand was heavy and that we needed to do it quickly. He amended that and said he figured out how to breathe, and that he was fine. I was worried, though, so I just took the shots fast without paying the attention I should have. He kept saying "check everything, take your time". What a sweet guy for putting up with all of this!!

Thanks for all the nice votes, but a huge thanks to my wonderful husband!!!

Wendy - I didn't see the arm blur as a big deal. I was more fascinated by the fact that the man allowed himself to pose in the sand like that lol. His expression and the boy's action was funny. Congrats on the top 10 too, neighbor! :)

Oh the lengths we go to get a DPC image. IMO, the motion helps; after all, soccor is a running game. This was one of my top picks.

love the playfulness of the shot. there's a bit of motion in the boy's hands - which i like as well. and the expression of the buried man's face fits his predicament well. nicely done!

I think you have a winner here - but, I think if you would have done this at a more active angle it would have been more engaging.

Well setup photo, especially the look on the guy's face. I do get the feeling that this photo has been over-sharpened a bit, which is hurting to overall shot.

Great idea, I can see how one would mistake head for ball :).
There is a bit of motion blur on the hands/arms though, and now that I've seen it I keep looking at it :(.

It was on account of the blurred appendages... Penny didn't like 'em either. Still, a cool pic.
