Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Multiple Light Sources (Basic Editing I)
Camera: Canon EOS-1D Mark II
Lens: Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM
Location: My basement
Date: May 25, 2004
Aperture: 8.0
ISO: 100
Shutter: 3.2 sec
Galleries: Studio, Floral
Date Uploaded: May 25, 2004

Three cheapo aluminum reflector lights to camera-left, one with a red filter, one with a blue and one with a green. (If you look, you can see the reflections of the 3 lights in the vase.) The shadows produced by this combination of lighting result in the secondary colors cyan, magenta and yellow (which explains my title) when just one of the light sources is blocked -- in this case, by the vase and flowers. (Hope the use of multiple light sources is obvious enough to the voters!)

I'm sure somebody will comment on it, so I'll address the issue now: the bluish tint at the top-left and yellowish tint at the bottom-right are the result of the three lights not being able to cast perfectly even illumination across the whole image to create "white" light. (I wish the background was pure white too!)

This is my first challenge entry since March, and my first with the 1D Mark II. I've been working on a big project around the house, so I've been trying to spend time on that instead of taking pictures for challenges... but I'm sneaking this one in the day submissions are due (after making a quick trip to the grocery store for some "Crazy Daisies", as they call them) while my wife is out shopping... =]

WOW. This is truly amazing. Only the second time I have found commenting on a photo truly due. This shot and process takes the cake.
Congratulations, I hope it earns you lots of $$$.
The link to the color shadow explanation was great. Thanks! :-)

A lot of people wanted to know how I did this, and it really isn't complicated. Thinking back to a science class demonstration, I remembered the "colored shadows" effect. So I set up a quick test, and when I saw that it would work, I started thinking about the "creative" aspect (the key part to most challenges, in my opinion) of what to have make the shadows. I eventually thought of using flowers that matched the colored shadows, but was reluctant because of the possible "another flower shot" backlash... but I decided to do it anyway because I couldn't think of anything better. =] So I made a quick trip to the grocery store (where I had seen these multi-colored daisies in the past) and bought the flowers. I shot with the lights in several different locations, but I settled on this composition for my entry.

(I'm glad this was a "Basic Editing" challenge, or I'm sure some voters would have assumed this effect was created in Photoshop!)

I found this web page which explains the colored shadows phenomenon for anyone interested.

Hi Eddy;
Congrats to your ribbon. It was well deserved.
I´m curious about your link. This is broken to me.

hey,
great shot. You & I were working on the same train of thought as I too entered a similar shot only yours came out much better. I like the white BG, brings out the colours really nicely. the only thing that I did not like was the blue shade in the upper left corner. otherwise flawless IMO. 9

I'd love to know how this was done. It looks like its a manipulated photo, but since its limited editing I guess it isnt. Beautiful colours.

Stunning composition - the simplicity of it is really wonderful and it is well executed. I wish (ever so slightly, you've done a marvelous job) that the shadows were a little more on one plane than angled up on the blue one.

this is a wonderful photograph, and i'm at a total loss as how you did it! the quality of this image is leagues ahead of many of the ones on offer this week - it's seemingly simple but oh so well set up and executed. my only slight thought is that there is a little too much empty space at the top... but that aside, it's perfect. 10.

how the heck did you do this? Beautiful!
  Photographer found comment helpful.
05/27/2004 02:31:45 PM
very nice - but I would have cropped tighter - you don't need the space at the top of the image (In my humble opinion). I love the way the shadows reflect the color of the flowers.

I like it quite a bit, be nicer if the corners were not reflective of the color..but nicely done..I guess most photos would take that out in photoshop hence why it's left here. 7.

great idea, but almost a little too washed out

GET OUT! i wanted to do something like this...nice execution. only recommendation is that you might've used smaller light sources or pulled them back to make the shadows sharper
