Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Fill Flash (Basic Editing)
Camera: Nikon D700
Lens: Nikon AF Fisheye-Nikkor 16mm f/2.8D
Location: Lima
Date: Dec 9, 2008
Aperture: f/5
ISO: 2500
Shutter: 1/640s
Galleries: Sports, Action
Date Uploaded: Dec 9, 2008

The model is my nephew Daniel, aka "Babas" in the skating world. He is a real skateboarding champ and you can know more about him here.

Camera set in manual mode for desired exposure of sky and focus of distant silhouettes while keeping a fast enough shutter speed (The Nikon D700 does great at ISO 2500 and the f/5 DOF of the 16mm fisheye FX lens is perfect). Flash sync speed set to “fp” mode to be able to shoot/sync at 1/640s to prevent dark/faded edges. Fill flash: on board SB-800 at full power in manual mode. Camera positioned (handheld) below subject level but high enough to get the horizon and silhouettes in good position.

Usual stuff for processing: crop, levels, curves, hue/sat, resize, border, usm.
Could not clone out dust speck on upper right in basic editing.

After challenge:
THANKS for your kind comments, votes and the ribbon!!!. Special thanks to my nephew Daniel for modeling. Ribbon dedicated to Jorge De Sousa for being a lot more than a super talented pg: a generous friend who is always open to teach and share. We all have much to learn from him.

To LevT: yes, you can clone out sensor dust in basic, but that is only when dust is ON THE SENSOR, which usually looks as a fuzzy dark spot (it blocks light). In this case the dust speck must be somewhere else since it does not look dark but whitish with sharp circular border (it is probably floating somewhere reflecting or difracting light towards the sensor), so I think it could not be cloned out without being dqd.

Great capture for the challenge. Good use of fill light to highlight the subject. The white might be a tiny bit overexposed though when being fussy. Sky looks great. The little red is good. The border works. Great submission here.
