i was hoping to get more than 6.2 on this ..
my first voter gave this a 4 ..
after 7 votes it was 5.2 ..
i was starting to worry even tho i dont usually take much notice now at the beginning of voting, because a couple of my highest scorers have had very bad starts ...
thankyou for all the comments ..

this photograph is uncropped .. taken at taronga park zoo on a saturday in the middle of the day .. the tiger was stalking around his enclosure waiting to be fed .. we were very close to him, separated by glass, & there were heaps of ppl crowding & jostling to get a better view .. the lower than ideal quality is because of the glass which was dirty .. also there were reflections of ppl on the glass when aiming the camera in different directions .. i tried to make up for the low quality with my processing ..

because i was asked during the voting how i processed this i'll put the steps in here ...
open jpeg in cs3 ..
did a lucisart action and erased from everywhere except the tiger ..
dodged the teeth that were very yellow ..
saturated his eyes a bit ..
did a noise ninja which i selectively erased on the tiger on his eyes, teeth and some hair etc.
sharpened but erased from background .
used redfield/perfectum plug-in on his nose, eyes, tongue & teeth because they were very grainy ..
sharpened again ..
did another redfield/perfectum on the background which helps reduce the noise/grain that you get when you sharpen ..
dodged the teeth again ..
did adjustment layers in .. selective colour, levels, colour balance & curves where i did a blending mode soft light at 23% to give it a bit of contrast ..
did a border using the canvas size option ..
resized and saved for web .

this is another photograph of the same tiger that i put in our may side challenge, also uncropped ...

and some gorillas and chimpanzees taken on the same day that i'm putting in here coz it might get more views .. !!

Very nice composition (if I was being REALLY picky I might say that I would have liked a slightly higher crop over the ears)

Amazing sharpness and a truly wonderous richness of colours.

I can pay this no bigger compliment than say that I thought it was one of SandyP's shots

Truly a thing of beauty

This is a beautiful shot. I love the dark tones. It reminds me of a black velvet painting. I particularly love the eyes in this.

Oh Roz! This is beautiful! You and Greg had a MOST successful zoo visit, didn't you! I love the rich beautiful way you processed it.

The reason I entered the one hummingbird in the challenge rather than the better one that I had entered into the side challenge was because it actually never occurred to me to enter any of them in a challenge until after I has already posted the one in the side challenge. I agree, it prob'ly would have done better, but I had already posted it, so I picked the one I liked next best :(

Out of focus?? What the...

Anyway, this is just magnificent, Roz. Beautiful clarity, awesome composition, outstanding colors. It's SO striking!

Good finish - this was a high scoring challenge, or I'm sure you would have placed higher with that dandy score. OX

Hi Roz,
Great shot, I gave you a 10 and expected this one to ribbon. How could anyone give this a 4 or 5, that is crazy to me!! Beautiful shot as usual!!

Hmmm, I'm trying to figure out if that tiger is stuffed or real. My inclination is to say stuffed. If more of his face had been in focus (teeth & nose) I would have scored it higher. I really like the lighting though and nice composition.

I think this would make a wonderful HUGE poster. There are some soft spots, but they are minimal, at best. Great colors and composition.

Awesome image. I think the lighting really makes it all work! It gets a 9 from me. Hope people don't vote it down over the debate of "A" as a word that I saw in the forums.

Its hard for me to vote on this GREAT photo... Where this taken in the wilds you would have deserved the next 100 Blue ribbons given! Yet since I suspect that it isn't I have to wonder if this beautiful creature may be stuffed in a room somewhere? I hope not though! The photo is done very well... 7

WOW this is totally AWESOME.....

A wonderful surprise, or is it a shock, as the tiger almost jumps right out of the picture into ones lap..... Thank goodness it doesn't, as I would be in terrible strife..... Love the velvet feeling in the textures.....
The eyes are amazing, especially the one on the left, as it is looking right at you..... Also love the use of the rule of thirds for this awesome composition.....
