I took this photo at the North Carolina Raptor Center. This is a juvenile red-shouldered hawk. His colors will come in sometime this summer. This photo has nothing to do with conflict unless you can conjure up some obscure relationship in your own mind :) I titled it 'Conflict' to try to fool people into believing that there is some amount of conflict in this photograph.

I'm with beagleboy. However, to assume your picture ruined either of our days is just as pompous as you alluding in your second sentence that you are forever helping DPC'ers to come up to your self proclaimed level of photography [you chalk his statement up to inexperience on DPC, come on, you were holding back from really saying "no one here, would be where they are without me"].

You are right... I couldn't hide it.. I tried :) You will be as good as I am one day if you keep trying... maybe... well, probably not...

Hey Johnny, just one question. Can I buy you for what you are worth and sell you for what you think you are worth?
04/03/2004 01:11:32 PM
This is just an amazing portrait, one day I will be as good is this ,I hope :-)

Too bad that in addition to marking comments helpful, we can't mark them awesome.
03/08/2004 10:30:02 AM
all this unresolved sexual tension - now if you could have just photographed that!
03/06/2004 02:20:13 AM
I didn't get a chance to vote in this challenge, but if I had, I would have given you an "F"...only 1 point. It really ticks me off when people such as yourself feel you have to enter a photo that has nothing to do with the challenge, just because it is an excellent photo. Bye the way, in another appropriate challenge I'm sure I would have given this a 10. I see you have many ribbons and I am sure they were well deserved, but I think that has gone to your head and you are acting like a pompous ass!
03/05/2004 03:59:48 PM
Just curious... was this a piece of performance art? The picture, while admittedly not relevant, produced the conflict?

Very nice shot, btw. I rented the 75-300IS for a surf trip once, and was very, very unhappy with it. I'm thinking I got a bad one, based on what you're putting out with it.
03/04/2004 05:44:52 PM
can i still vote for conflict? i give this thread a 10. :)

LOL yeah you're not pompous at all, my humble apologies :-)

How come you haven't added me to your favorites list yet? Wanna buy a print?

That is correct. I choose to vote as if there is no challenge topic. That's my choice and I'm not trying to force that on anyone.

As for helping people, well, I will ignore that remark from you and chalk it up to your own inexperience and relative newness to this site.

I don't play for score here anymore. I have been there and done that. I have been outside my comfort zone during my learning process. If you want to call what I do 'lazy', feel free. I choose to photograph what makes me happy. I don't waste my own time shooting subject and topics that don't interest me anymore. I have done that to a very large extent during my learning process and participation here on this site. I did not get where I am now by not pandering to the vote. I have grown beyond the point of worrying too much about what other people think about my work.

I think the only conflict I raised with this photo was with you :) You obviously haven't read my original comment that I submitted with this photo or you would know that already. I don't think it meets the challenge either and never did.

I also encourage you to continue voting the way you do. Everyone should vote in their own manner and style. If you see a photo that deserves a 1, then give it a 1 :)

If I ruined your day by submitting this photo, the I apologize.

Even YOU have to laugh at that!

I didn't laugh. That means that there are at least 12 other people around here who vote the same way I do.

And what way would that be? Scoring a shot high even if it doesn't meet the challenge description in the slightest manner? An awesome panorama shot for a macro challenge? A clear, crisp studio shot of a 1967 GTO for a nature challenge? The family cat for every challenge?

That doesn't help anyone. People will just submit stuff that they are comfortable shooting, like you and your birds lately. People tend to be lazy, they shoot what is easy, close by, easy to pull off. People have to step outside their comfort zone if they really want to grow. Racking one's brain to find something that fits the challenge properly is part of the process. Copping out with a bird/cat/kid/whatever shots that has no reference to the challenge isn't worth much in the scope of the challenge structure of this site.

Oh, and I gave this a 1. You hand 1's out according to your point of view, I hand them out according to mine. You may have been trying to raise conflict with submitting such an image, just like Jacko did with his brown ribbon submission. In that case, well done.

I am always a little "conflicted" over an image like this, but not enough to give it a poor score.

The challenge topic really is only a guideline for taking pictures but most people probably believe no consideration to topic was given and they consider that important and so voted their conscience accordingly.

I was not one of the 12 that gave it a "10" because the upper beak and a couple breast feathers just below the neck were a little overexposed for my taste. But this is a great picture.

Wicked shot, Setz! Your bird photography is unbelievable, but what happened to you not entering any challenges for a year?? Personally I'm glad to see you entering.

Exeptional photo,my favorite !
03/02/2004 09:45:01 PM
Nice bird shot, but unless the bird's name is Conflict, you are soooo off topic.
03/02/2004 05:45:57 PM
Absolutely beautiful. I see no conflict here, though.
03/02/2004 01:56:24 PM
Beautiful photo, but how is this conflict?
03/02/2004 01:49:32 PM
Absolutely beautiful; I'll score accordingly, though I don't see the conflict--aside from what's implied in that steely, warlike gaze...
03/02/2004 12:57:43 PM
Gorgeous picture!!!
03/02/2004 09:32:40 AM
Beautiful shot, nice detail, DOF and composition. Superb photograph.
I feel it doesn't convey the message of conflict by itself.
03/01/2004 06:26:08 PM
A very beautiful shot. Gorgeous details and perfect DOF. Call me stupid, but I don't see the link of this bird to the idea of "conflict"... still... 7 from me.
03/01/2004 12:42:45 PM
Is he supposed to be staring down an enemy or challenger? Pretty good shot of this guy, but where's the conflict?
03/01/2004 08:17:03 AM
Beautiful raptor, but where's the conflict?
03/01/2004 04:26:42 AM
Great Capture. I love the detail.
02/29/2004 11:21:56 PM
I don't understand how this represents conflict...
02/29/2004 06:31:41 PM
Wonderful picture, but it doesn't really say conflict to me.
02/29/2004 05:12:25 AM
lovely shot but is the bird looking conflicted? seems off topic
02/29/2004 02:35:13 AM
AMAZING clarity! Great shot!
02/28/2004 11:57:25 PM
A very nice photo
02/28/2004 03:48:16 PM
Great photo, seems to be shoved into the challenge though.
02/28/2004 02:55:54 PM
Not sure where the conflict is but this is a fantastic image of this bird. Well done!
02/28/2004 12:43:46 PM
thank goodness a good photo....
02/28/2004 10:37:26 AM

Great pic John. 10 ;)
02/28/2004 02:32:52 AM
Great photo, but, I just don't see the conflict connection.
02/28/2004 12:01:49 AM
nice photo, but I see no conflict
02/27/2004 10:25:52 PM
an amazing image very detailed and focus is brilliant but I dont see conflict not really 7
02/27/2004 04:56:04 PM
WOW, great one John. Nice title! Need some more room for prints huh? Have to give this a 10. :)
02/27/2004 03:46:48 PM
I'm not sure if you're trying to show conflict of Nature vs Human, Nature vs Nature: survival of the fittest, or what. I do think this is a fantastic shot on it's own, striking, but in this challenge, sorry, not really. Perhaps if it is about the battle between nature and civilization, then less cropping would illustrate the point [showing surroundings or something, cause I can't see what you saw!]
02/27/2004 01:42:18 PM
very nice photo but Doesn't fit the catagory
02/27/2004 07:46:04 AM
Absolutely stunning photo, can't fault it. I don't understand how this says "conflict" though (please PM if you want as it could just be me missing the point).
02/27/2004 03:17:24 AM
Nice, clear picture! But the conflict seems to be only in the title.
02/27/2004 12:32:24 AM
While the image is fantasic, I cannot rate it very high becasue I am lost as to the depiction of conflict. From what I see, this bird has everything under control.
02/27/2004 12:31:44 AM
I don't see the conflict, but that's a first rate shot.
02/26/2004 11:07:46 PM
Wow.... great color, composition, sharpness..... it 'conflicts' with conflict though..... heh?, does that mean it meets the challenge?
02/26/2004 11:00:29 PM
More than conflict this symbolises "hunt" for me - great picture, sharply in focus, good details.
02/26/2004 08:21:16 PM
Awesome bird photo, however, I don't see any "conflict" there. 3
02/26/2004 04:14:29 PM
??
02/26/2004 03:24:02 PM
Beautiful picture but I really see no conflict!
02/26/2004 03:16:04 PM
Great shot. I'm not seeing conflit. I'm willing to understand if you want to PM me and explain. I doubt this shot could be improved technically.
02/26/2004 01:19:57 PM
Was this a serious entry for this challenge?

The technical merits of photo are w/o question. Very strong in all regards. I think I would like to try to grap the yellow underneath the eye as the trim highlight border. Maybe you tried this and it was too much, so you made the right move.

If I stretch, I imagine the conflict is survival. That's a little too profoud for the knuckleheads voting. Still rates high in my book. Good luck.
02/26/2004 11:33:12 AM
great picture but does not meet the challenge at all
Score 2
02/26/2004 04:43:00 AM
Beautiful bird. I don't blame you for entering it on the one hand, but on the other hand. On the other hand, you probably are not getting a fair shake with this photo because I can't see how this meets the challenge in any way. Nice color well framed and good catchlight.
02/26/2004 02:39:30 AM
What? How is this conflict? A photo of a hawk? I am sorry but this doesnt seem like it is in the right challenege...
02/26/2004 02:31:15 AM
I'm sorry but how? The image in general is gorgeous, and I would only wish that I could capture something like this, but relating back to the challenge, how?
02/26/2004 12:15:02 AM
Nice picture...No conflict to
02/25/2004 08:33:23 PM
Nice bird shot.
02/25/2004 08:07:08 PM
Perfect. It's an endangered animal, right? That's the only trouble, if that's not the conflict I don't know what it is.
02/25/2004 07:35:51 PM
Beautiful texture II
02/25/2004 06:27:41 PM
very beautiful pic, the color and sharpness are great
02/25/2004 06:08:52 PM
where is the conflict?
02/25/2004 04:23:08 PM
stunning photo and focus is spot on ...
02/25/2004 04:01:45 PM
Gorgeous bird. Gorgeous shot. But what's the conflict?
02/25/2004 02:10:32 PM
very nice photo, however i don't see or get the impression of conflict
02/25/2004 01:28:03 PM
nice pic, but (for me) does not fit the challenge well - it doesn't say 'conflict' without an explanation. give 'im a mouse in the mouth or talon..
02/25/2004 12:39:18 PM
I really love this photo. It has great rich tones and wonderful detail. I think it's a great idea to use a bird of prey in this challenge; however, I think it would have been set apart if you captured the bird with its mouth open or its wings spread. I realize it's difficult with wildlife though. Good shot!
02/25/2004 09:04:55 AM
Stunning detail. Not the best in class for the title of the challenge, but certainly the best overall photo I have viewed!
02/25/2004 08:43:23 AM
great shot, but it doesn't seem to fit the challenge
02/25/2004 05:28:20 AM
Very nice bird picture, but I don't see the conflict.
02/25/2004 05:27:00 AM
Lovely photo. Can't see the connection to the challenge, though.
