The nomadic Himba people live in northern Kaokoland, Namibia, and this is a young boy of the tribe with traditonal pearl necklace. Most of his face covered with dust. I was there early October with a delegation from the Icelandic International Development Agency (ICEIDA) that has started co-operation with the Himba people.

I like to express my gratitude to all of you who wrote these wonderful comments and gave my photo top score, my highest ever. When I joined DPChallenge late last year I never dreamed of ribbon and 7+ score. Now that has happened twice. This feels so good!

The photo is dedicated to Himba people of Kaokoland and especially to this little boy. Unfortunately I don´t know his name. The agency I´m working for, ICEIDA, is supporting the small Himba communities in northern Namibia and we spent two hours with them one day early October. We are supporting them with f.ex. tents for two preschools. I took some portraits of the children and also photos of some other members of this spectacular tribe. I will soon share more photos with you.

Thanks again.

This child is not male. This child is female. You can tell by the hair.

Males children keep their heads mostly shaved, with a thin line of short hair running down the center. Female children wear their hair in braids until puberty when they change their hair style into the traditional long braids covered in the ochre-butter mixture. The number of braids a female child has tells about her family members. Forward facing braids tell about her parents (whether she has both or just one) and back facing braids tell about the grandparents.

This is a lovely photo, full of expression, and meaningful to me, because I lived with the Himba, in Opuwa, and Ehomba, in the Koakoveld, for 4 months, in the late '80s............a time full of so many memories.
Very well done.

Beautiful portrait. Love the texture of his skin you captured. Love the expression and the duotone. Now the nit pick: I would have included all of the neck collar instead of cutting it off, use a small amount of fill flash to reduce the shadows around the eyes. This has Goodman top ten written all over it! ;)
