Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Fear (Classic Editing)
Camera: Canon EOS-D60
Location: Grand Canyon, AZ
Date: Jul 5, 2002
Aperture: 5.6
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/350
Date Uploaded: Jul 7, 2002

Shot with 300 mm lens on South rim of Grand Canyon later afternoon. I had been struggling with the fear subject all week. Being on the edge of the canyon, the idea of "fear" along the edge was obviously in the back of my mind. That this completely fearless mountain goat would show up at the right time on the edge of a 3000 feet drop was pretty unbelieveable. I took a dozen shots where this one is definately the most impressive with the goat seemingly posing for me out in the wild.

06/09/2007 02:09:54 PM
Wow! Really great!
06/09/2007 06:27:57 AM
really impressive. sometimes all you need is luck, and that was was what you had in that case :) nice shot, congratulations...
05/26/2007 10:36:29 AM
I'd say you are both fearless! wonderful comp and color!
05/16/2007 08:17:52 PM

02/22/2007 01:28:57 AM
amazing
02/03/2007 05:19:36 PM
I felt the same way when I was at the rim of the canyon: don't fall. It is clear you were at the right place at the right time and were lucky enough to have the goat just stand there while you were able to get a few shots off. This was a great shot and fits the title perfectly.
12/31/2006 12:47:28 AM
Absolutely Fantastic shot. My congratulations. Left me thinking of the whole concept of 'Fear'!
12/24/2006 11:09:53 PM
Thanks for sharing your awesome good fortune to be in the right place and ready when the right time happened. This looks like the "big one" that you will have to measure up to from now on. Well deserved big blue.
01/06/2006 07:03:57 PM
This has to be so far my fravourite on the site.Breathtaking, and timing of the goat is impecable
12/29/2005 06:53:47 PM
Are you ever considering putting it in DPC Prints? I would've buy it on the spot.
12/10/2005 04:10:16 PM
it looks like one of my own goats, but great job..i dident know goats live in the gret canyon
12/07/2005 07:35:30 PM
Don't do it man! It's just not worth it!
10/02/2005 10:09:42 PM
Now that's a great shot. Thinking of it on a different tack to fear, you should make it a farewell card with a caption like "We'll miss you!"
08/25/2005 07:05:44 AM
Great photo...I get vertigo just looking at it
06/18/2005 06:43:54 PM
How did I miss this? Oh it is excellent. Super take on the moment!
05/07/2005 02:13:13 PM
I love it and think it is the best photo on the whole site.
05/07/2005 03:13:27 AM
As many times as I have seen this, I never realized it wasn't in my favorites.
One of the most amazing photographs around.
05/04/2005 04:28:56 PM
Nice to see someone go out of their neighborhood to do a shoot. Even nicer to see you being rewarded by this goat and your camera for doing so.
03/16/2005 03:47:11 PM
I would like to buy non-exclusive rights to this photo. How does one get in touch with the photographer when no email is given in his profile? Thanks, Mike, temp2@tut.com
03/16/2005 03:25:48 PM
Unbelievable! Thanks for sharing it!
03/11/2005 04:47:28 AM
Astounding shot !!!
03/08/2005 11:07:26 AM
Wow! Great shot! Perfect timing on your part. . . .
01/22/2005 09:27:37 AM
right time & the right place.
11/24/2004 02:50:15 AM
Very nice photo! Excellent timing indeed.

However, I believe the animal in the photo is a desert bighorn sheep.

10/12/2004 07:46:58 AM
textThats Awsome...How did you get a picture of that animal...was it a Snapshot??? I give it a 10
08/16/2004 09:50:45 AM
Inspiring.
07/17/2004 08:17:00 PM
this is .....photo in best photos.
05/28/2004 05:16:46 PM
This shot is awesome!
05/02/2004 04:57:46 PM
This is quite possibly the most amazing photography I've ever seen.
11/18/2003 02:42:14 PM
Perfect shot! You definitely deserved the Blue with this one. It's an amazing capture...congrats!
10/09/2003 04:40:55 AM
A simply awesome shot! What incredible luck, but great skill to get the shot just right with such tangible sensation of scale in the composition.

I seriously want to slap anyone who rated this 5 or below. The person who voted this 1 should get their coat, back their bags and check out of life! ;)
01/08/2003 10:07:56 PM
Incredible timing. I really like this picture.
10/13/2002 04:50:00 AM
Perfect example of the rule of thirds! Can you imagine how average this photo would of been without the photographers keen eye??
08/14/2002 09:28:00 PM
Awesome picture. I can't believe the goat would go to the edge like that.
07/19/2002 01:41:00 AM
You've got to be the luckiest man alive to get that shot

07/17/2002 05:21:00 AM
you caught the moment...beautiful pic indeed. thumbs up!
07/16/2002 01:32:00 PM
Great photo,congrats on first place!!!
07/15/2002 04:58:00 PM
Congrats on your win, an awesome photo. Good luck on your sale! Look forward to more good things from you. :)
07/15/2002 01:45:00 AM
Thanks for all the comments! I must say that I am very happy to get this win after just a few participations in the dpchallenge (that I think is a terrific concept BTW)! Thanks to your votes I realized that this picture may actually have some potential........here's what the photo editor of one of the major US wildlife magazines said: "It's a perfectly good photo, very dramatic." I was obviously very excited by this feedback! We'll see what happens, maybe this will be my first photo sale ever?!?! Good luck with "texture" challenge everyone! Jakob aka Chakkobbo

07/15/2002 12:41:00 AM
Again, nice capture! Great detail! CONGRATS!
07/15/2002 12:20:00 AM
Jakob, congrats on the win :)

Excellent photo.
07/14/2002 10:58:00 PM
Just a tad soft on the focus, but otherwise a really nice shot. Great luck to happen to catch this moment! Nice colors, good composition. Well done.
07/14/2002 08:32:00 PM
The best non-horror-ish picture this week, I think. It's not comical like most came out, but downright satisfying in the guts because when you look at it, you're inevitably forced to put yourself in the position of the animal.
07/14/2002 08:00:00 PM
TIme and place. Wow!
07/14/2002 07:58:00 PM
I really LOVE this picture! For me, it does fall into the realm of fear (of heights), but it is really just the picture as a whole that appeals to me.
07/14/2002 07:07:00 PM
Whoa
07/14/2002 06:28:00 PM
It's a nice shot, but I'm not entirely sure where the 'fear' is.
07/14/2002 06:00:00 PM
super shot
07/14/2002 05:47:00 PM
Great shot -- wish the colors in the background weren't so flat -- but I also know how hard it can be to bring them out when you're talking that kind of distance. (After the competition's over, play with it in an editing program.) What I really want to know is what it's looking at....
07/14/2002 01:53:00 PM
Beautiful shot. I know if I were where you were I would be somewhat fearful. 9
07/14/2002 12:11:00 PM
I can't believe you got a shot like this. Your DOF really gives us the sense of enormity of the canyon.
07/14/2002 01:29:00 AM
great picture, my favorite this week, wish the further part of the canyon wasn't so dull (if that is the correct description), it just seems a ltitle too bright and maybe a little blurry
07/13/2002 11:50:00 PM
Really clear, sharp, and beautiful photo. One of my favorites this week.
07/13/2002 03:44:00 PM
Doesn't fearless mean a lack of fear? Maybe it would have worked better for a fearless contest.

4 -Tim
07/13/2002 03:12:00 PM
Interesting approach - fearLESS - nice photo, good color, contrast and lighting works well too
07/13/2002 10:21:00 AM
Nice catch.
07/12/2002 10:17:00 PM
This is a great shot! It's great how that goat creature is looking down the canyon.
07/12/2002 09:00:00 PM
This is a great photograph! It appears that you caught it during the :Sweet Light" period of either early morning or evening. This has given the background rich color as well as just enough light to properly expose the subject. Very inspiring, but may not do real well because most will think it misses a direct hit on fear. You deserve a 9 from Autool.
07/12/2002 10:59:00 AM
This is a great photograph. The fear factor for me is the height. Dont care too much for the title, yes the animal is fearless but I think something like "A long way down" would of worked better for this challenge.
07/12/2002 02:16:00 AM
great pic....one of the few 10s i gave
07/11/2002 10:40:00 PM
sweet shot :)
07/11/2002 09:14:00 PM
This is a beautiful picture! Wouldn't change a thing.
07/11/2002 09:13:00 PM
a wonderful picture! But the goat's crazy.
07/11/2002 02:24:00 PM
VERY nicely done.
07/11/2002 11:38:00 AM
What a neat photo. I hope you post where this was taken. I have one that is simular my husband took when he went to the Grand Canyon. Nice photo. Great shot!
07/11/2002 10:40:00 AM
i love it. top notch. right place, right time. : ) mag 99.
07/11/2002 10:25:00 AM
The mountain goats can have the ledges. None for me, thanks. Is this the Grand Canyon? I was there about 5 years ago, wouldn't go ANYWHERE near the edges. Awesome shot. Wouldn't change a "thang." karmat
07/11/2002 10:10:00 AM
cool shot! I wouldn't change a thing!
07/11/2002 07:59:00 AM
Quite a shot.
07/11/2002 01:08:00 AM
Beautiful picture!
07/10/2002 11:41:00 PM
Awesome photo but just cant give a 10 for something the goat is programed to do. 8
07/10/2002 11:21:00 PM
My pick for number 1. Unfortunately for you, my number one picks don't usually do well. I certainly hope that's not the case here because this is an incredible shot. A+
07/10/2002 08:03:00 PM
Great nature photo. Beautiful. But not with the theme.
07/10/2002 03:26:00 PM
Very good composition :)
07/10/2002 03:19:00 PM
Neat pic though does not show fear, still a cool pic.
07/10/2002 02:28:00 PM
would be excelent in a nature group
07/10/2002 02:22:00 PM
I really like this shot and the title does explain what you were "going for", (sound of shoe dropping) but I don't buy it. It isn't a question of the goat's fearlessness, this is it's environment (do you fear your house?); as for you being in it's place (substitution thing), if you were the goat, you'd be "at home", too. Absolutely wonderful shot, thank you for sharing, too bad the challenge wasn't drop dead great nature shots, you'd have won hands down. 5 Swash
07/10/2002 01:31:00 PM
Beautiful shot! One of my favorites - 10. :)
07/10/2002 12:34:00 PM
subject 10 compositon 10 lighting 9 focus 9 total 9.59
07/10/2002 10:57:00 AM
"Fearless" naw, ther's a safety-net just out of frame ;-)
I love this beautifull postcard photograph, one of my top picks this week.
07/10/2002 08:06:00 AM
Wow, this is a great shot...
07/10/2002 04:12:00 AM
The fear factor clearly being in imagining oneself in the sheep's (goat's?) place.
07/10/2002 01:11:00 AM
beautiful shot
07/10/2002 12:12:00 AM
I really like this one.
07/09/2002 10:21:00 PM
This shot is so unbelievably incredible. (where this was taken). I have spent months in the wilderness trying to get a shot like this, One simply does not just stumble across a photo opportunity of this magnitude. - I would give this an 11 Congrats.
07/09/2002 09:00:00 PM
that is f-in sweet!
07/09/2002 07:29:00 PM
I'd say it's scared. I liked this one.
07/09/2002 07:22:00 PM
This is an amazing photo... Is this the grand canyon? I'm glad i wasn't taking pictures in that heat :) The fear factor seems a little weak to me but I'm giving this photo a 9 purely on it's subjective appeal :) = 9 - jmsetzler
07/09/2002 03:59:00 PM
Stunning, Stunning, Stunning. (Im stunned!)
07/09/2002 03:34:00 PM
Great photo "9", HOWEVER, fear - fearless, Black -white, jing - jang. "Opposites".
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt onthe basis of how good the image is.
Overall "7". Dogman ;-)
07/09/2002 03:11:00 PM
Wow!
07/09/2002 02:55:00 PM
I like this. Wonderful scene. Challengewise, I'd say you meet it (albeit at the backdoor).
07/09/2002 02:10:00 PM
whoa.. you got it at the right time! nice!
07/09/2002 12:26:00 PM
Genial! I can feel the fear in my chest.....! Great shot...
07/09/2002 12:21:00 PM
This is a really great shot. Although its just an animal, it shows isolation as well as vastness. The shot has a good angle and is respectably clear. I am feeling the goat! Good shot!
07/09/2002 10:54:00 AM
i'm trying not to swear, thats an awesome photo!!!!
you're so lucky to take such a great photo. it's perfect! this will be the only 10 I give out this week, well done dude.
07/09/2002 10:21:00 AM
Cheaer, cheater, cheater.!!! If only I had this cool a shot choice.

Very Ansel Adamesque but nees a bit more saturation, sharpness or focus on my monitor..still one of my 10 best.....8 ..hokie
07/09/2002 07:48:00 AM
Super shot!
07/09/2002 05:12:00 AM
good selection of the frame.Well placed... good job
07/09/2002 12:48:00 AM
Beautiful photo. Good interpertation of the challenge.
07/09/2002 12:36:00 AM
these guys amaze me
07/08/2002 10:54:00 PM
Beautiful piece of work...
07/08/2002 10:37:00 PM
Excellent wonderful composition! I love this photograph......I can't give it a 10 this week because you've really captured the opposite of Fear in my opinion. I used to live in Washington State and would watch these animals leap around on the edge of cliffs -- they really are fearless. Great shot (8).
07/08/2002 09:55:00 PM
Totally cool shot, among my favorites this week. Good job!
07/08/2002 09:19:00 PM
the challenge is fear, not fearless, sorry.
just kidding, I love your picture and I thought it was yours from the moment I saw it - ok, I knew you went to LV and GC for the weekend ;-) color, DOF, crop, meet the challenge, a plain 10! hope you win
beegee
07/08/2002 04:30:00 PM
Wonderful photgraph. I love the many light contrasts and the stratae of the surrounding canyons. Having a fear of heights myself, I can only admire the courage of the photgraper for capturing this moment
07/08/2002 02:47:00 PM
Great capture...8
07/08/2002 02:42:00 PM
Yes!! I don't want to be where this ones standing!!
07/08/2002 02:26:00 PM
YEY THATS GOOD
07/08/2002 01:09:00 PM
beautiful, but.....
07/08/2002 12:41:00 PM
You just took this? Wow timely shot!! It's very nice. Kee
07/08/2002 12:20:00 PM
I love this shot and I love your reversing the fear theme. Tell me, did the silly thing jump? :-)
07/08/2002 11:36:00 AM
cool! : )
07/08/2002 09:20:00 AM
That's a classic shot.
07/08/2002 09:20:00 AM
I wanna say this is in the top 3 at least b/c I'd be scared shitless if that was me there. This is a GREAT GREAT GREAT shot!!!
07/08/2002 08:56:00 AM
Great shot. I like the goat, it gives scale and helps the vertigo along nicely.
07/08/2002 02:02:00 AM
Wish I could have seen where you were standing to get this shot! That would have been REALLY scary!
07/08/2002 01:51:00 AM
WOW ! What a capture ! I am now wondering where you had to be to take this !
This to me is fear !
07/08/2002 12:57:00 AM
Beautiful!
