Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Coffee Shop (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Canon EOS-350D Rebel XT
Lens: Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM for Canon
Location: Clarke's Restaurant, Chicago, USA
Date: Oct 1, 2005
Aperture: f/2.8
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/640
Galleries: Black and White, Food and Drink
Date Uploaded: Oct 1, 2005

Photo taken during breakfast at Clarke's Restaurant in Chicago. Special thanks to my wife, who tolerates my incessant photography, and who went to several coffee shops with me this weekend.

One thing I learned from this is that a 30mm lens (on a Canon 350D) is barely wide enough to photograph someone sitting across the table from you.

Post challenge: I'm very happy that this photo was so well received. I was afraid that voters would be turned off by the extreme crop. The funny thing is the upper right corner wasn't really cropped at all. I accidentally framed it that way in camera. But I like the intimate feel that it gives to the image.

This is a fabulous b/w shot, the tones are perfect! I love her distant "wish i was somewhere else" expression. Very nice!

Congrats KM, I was just checking what other owners of the Sigma 30 have done so far at DPC (I have a Nikkor version). Score high, that's what they do. :)

Great sharpness, sweet bokeh, good contrast for B&W. Love it. The pic and the lens. :)

I'm imagining this photo if the focus were inverted and the cup was the spotlight with your wife blurred a bit in the background. I think her pose and expression would serve it well, it's a wonderful picture. I like the way the photo is cropped but think seeing her hand more on the cup would have topped it off *grrr*.

this is by far the best photo of the challenge - I'm sorry the masses don't know that

drop by my house and pick up the blue ribbon I'm making for you - excellent framing, great work!

Congratulations, Chris. What I like best (other than Kapan) is the crop ... there's something very intimate & 'coffeshop-esque' about the fact that both the model and the cup are cropped a bit. It makes them sort of squeezed in, as happens in most coffee shops. Can't believe people wanted the cup in focus; perhaps they thought it was an accident, or that you don't know how to work your camera?

I'm going to Clarke's! Beautiful model/patron. However for this image, and this challenge, I wonder if it would have been better to have the coffee cup in focus and that lovely lady just out of focus in your DOF. I like the shot a lot, as it very nicely depicts the coffee shop theme. Very nicely done <9>

This photo is my favorite in the challenge. It captures the feel of a coffe shop perfectly and the contrast is wonderful. A crop that isn't so tight is the only point of suggestion I have.

Composition a bit too cramped for my taste, I would have liked to see a little bit more space around her head, specifically above it and to her right but other than that, very nice work. Excellent job on the b/w conversion, the skin tone is good and technically everything is good. 7 from me.

I really like this shot. I love the oversized glasses and how they draw attention up to her eyes after pondering the cup. I also like how the glasses obscure the eyes but not completely so that we can only just barely see her eyes, it makes me wonder all the more what she is contemplating. Well done 8.

I wish I had a view like this in the morning, tell her thanks.

I think for 2006 I will try to better my view accross the table in the morning.

Spoken by a guy whoses only better half is the guy in the mirror.

I am having a hard time figuring out the focus of this picture. It doesn't appear to be the coffee but her necklass. Thats where I keep going to. I do like the satisfied and relaxed expression but it might be more powerful if you focused on the cup more so that the background had the hint of blur to it.

A gorgeous photograph. I love that you bother to include (what I assume is) a cup of coffee, but don't make it the subject of your image.
