holy smokes! what a pleasant surprise this turned out to be!!! thank you all, from the bottom of my heart, for the comments, votes, and views...

post-processing
cropped. changed mode to lab color and adjusted levels in the lightness channel. changed to grayscale mode. sized to 400x600. used crop tool to add border. saved for web. ran through neat image to reduce noise.

the shot itself
i had taken my son to a park to hang out while my daughter was at tae kwon do. my intention was to shoot him on the playground, but, when we got there, i noticed another photographer shooting some guys at the adjacent skate park...somehow, that seemed to grab my attention ;-)

so, i went in a laid down on the ground beside the pipe and shot 8 runs that this skater made. i was shooting in burst mode, and each run had 6-10 shots. this was from the 6th run. after about 4 runs, i had an idea as to what i was looking for and how i wanted to shoot it.

the original

the real challenge was the fading light. this was shot about 6:30pm, with the sunlight already being heavily filtered by the park trees. my concern wasn't as much for my equipment being able to capture the image as it was for how it render. with the cloudless sky, there was not going to be a huge range of tones. i was also concerned about how close in i could crop it and maintain sharpness.

here's a slideshow of the sequence.

all in all, i am quite pleased with how the image turned out. it was a tough one to watch on the scoring side because, well, this is dpc and ya just never know ;-)

thanks again!

I am a skateboarder and a photographer, and I really like this photo. Both the original and the grayscale are magazine worthy. There are great photo ops at skateparks.

This could definitely confuse someone if this weren't a photography site.

RESULT! Great capture Skip and well done on the start of your ribboneering.

For the record I actually prefer your out-take from a skateboarding POV - it demonstrates better skill - but this shot is more aesthetic.

Good action shot. I would have liked it more if you cropped out the fence on the bottom. It would leave more to the imagination.

A little too much shadow for my liking (I would love to be able to see the face). However, given the perspective and complexity in achieving the shot this is a top image. I like it.

Very nice action shot. The only thing I would like to see would perhaps be a black hairline border along the very edge of the photo itself. Hope you get a ribbon. 10
