Post challenge: Thank you all for all the wonderful comments! I was shocked this did so well.

3/20/09 - Over the years (as I chuckle at that) I have been asked about the apparent tilted horizon. My first answer is "Calibrate your monitor!" If you are viewing the photo correctly, the roofline of the garage behind the shrubs is clearly not on a slant. The lawn they are planted in clearly is. But it does not matter. I was a newbie then and am even more so now. I have much too much to learn.

I've come back to this often because of its brazen boldness and curious qualities so am making it a favorite.

Very imaginative! This image grabs my attention every time I see it. The desaturated background really serves to make the trees pop out.

Ya know... This image has stuck with me since it first appeared in the challenge (I scored it a 9 btw). I thought it was such a creative use of processing, that I've tried several times to mimic it myself (including a version of my "Crop Circles" shot). I just haven't been able to duplicate the pleasing quality you achieved in this image though. The tones you chose are the key - I'm sure. Just wanted to let you know how much this particular shot influenced me. It's a fantastic example of how you can make the otherwise mundane remarkable. Kudos to you for an outstanding piece of work!

I love this picture! You must have seen the gum drops when noticing the trees, that is a great achievement IMO. Not many people can come up with ideas like this.

Well done on your top 20 finish ! this was my fave of all; I voted very quickly last night & didn't have time to comment, but I loved the idea of this - it has a real dreamy atmosphere and a great title. Well done.

I can't really tell how this was done but I like it! Fits the challenge perfect and its extremely well executed. I've been seeing a bunch of stuff that dosen't fit well so this is a breath of fresh air. 10

Great attempt for this challenge. The fine detail clarity in it is FANTASTIC and the similar trees are good choices for your experiment. The grey background is a great idea.

It will be interesting to see how viewrers react to it, but if left to just technical quality then this image should place very high.

On the technical side the bottom left of the center blue tree looks like it migh flow over the true boundary and the amount of foreground grass may be little more than the composition needs.

Like this image a lot.

While an interesting take on the challenge, The selective coloration of each of the trees is not to my taste. The edges of each tree, especially the orange and yellow one look really cut and pasted. The background, though darkened out, still shows the house roof, and it doesn't add to the photo as well.

Love this shot. Everytime I browse the thumbnails I have to open this one up to look. Its not the best technically in this challenge and there are other images that make me go wow! But this image has been growing on me and I have no idea why. I had scored it an 8 but I'm bumping it up to 10. I can't relate to you what quality this image has that keeps me coming back but you got me. Good luck in the challenge!

Whoah...

Far out ;)

A 7 from me, simple composition, busy and rhythmic but it works out nicely and the colours are fantastic and really 'far out'. I think you've leaned to heavily on the PS work here though. Nevertheless, I really like this image! A 7 from me :)

sweet(:-}.
Why so many cols
3 is max, + accent if needed, any more confuses the eye.
look at a colour wheel on google then recolour.

really like the colors in the trees -- suggest leveling the horizon -- the bit behind the trees on the left is a bit distracting. fits the theme well and your use of editting enhances the shot.

Going through and commenting on all my 5 votes, as I find this type of photo usually receives the least amount.

This is some good saturation and hue work.. but in all honesty, it still looks like it's a part of *this* world. (And the darkened unsaturated background really distracts), only hit by someone with a few cans of spray paint.

Idea is good, but it looks overprocessed. More of digital art!
Focus is good, and the trees look very sharp! Maybe less colors, what you say?!?

A tighter crop, without all of the grass in front may have given the tree's more impact. That light green takes away from the rest of the image.

Wierd editing - I like my grass green, maybe then I could handle gumdrop trees but the torquoise is too much for me.

Feels like something Lewis Carol or C.S.Lewis might have written about. Nice job. You did a nice job masking off the trees to colorize them. I like the subdued background but that will probably be a matter of personal taste for folks. It feels a little oversharpened but that actually contributes to the fantasy. Good luck in the voting.

ah, I had an idea very similar, but no way to execute it. You pulled it off with finesse.
