Challenge: Pain (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Nikon D70
Location: Monterey Bay, California
Date: Feb 8, 2005
Aperture: F5.3
ISO: 400
Shutter: 4/40th
Galleries: Portraiture, Persuasive
Date Uploaded: Feb 8, 2005

This was taken in the hallway of my dorm room in Monterey, CA.

Just a few adjustments with the hue/sat, curves, and crop, with a dose of NI.

My model was a lovely friend of mine named Jessica and the guy in the background is my roommate Nick!

They were both great sports about the shoot!

It's a bit dark, there will be people who miss the black eye. It may also be a bit too subtle, I think many will miss the bottle in the mans hand.
That said, I love it. Great tone and color choice and I like that it's slightly off tilt to create a bit more tention. I also like that she isn't making an exagerated face, the photo speaks for itself without the acting that many others (myself included) had to employ. Nice work!

Very emotive, realistic, has a genuine look about it. Super job!! (May be a bit dark, but I think it works with the emotions/feelings being conveyed)

Great idea. I like the DOF. I wish there was a little more light on her face - to highlight the black eye more.

I like this one. The girl takes in about half of the frame and is really close to the watcher. This along with the well-applied DOF make me connect to her immediately. The title allows some interpretations which all go into the same direction. You might be referring to the hallway which is blocked by the man. Or it is linked to the man's addiction to alcohol, which is suggested by the bottle in his hand, which he took along outside the flat. The third, and most striking interpretation that occured to me is that for the girl there is no way out of this relationship.
The only thing that bothers me is the girls black eye. The picture works well enough without it, and would allow for the spectator's imagination to get going.
10. Good luck.

A little too dark. Too much detail lost in the shadows.

Nice composition, but looks a bit posed and overly theatrical

good idea and interesting composition. her expression doesn't really look pained to me though. she seems almost content, which I'm sure is not the emotion you were trying to convey

I THINK I know what you're going for here, but I'm not convinced. The girl's expression is impassive, there's nothing to make the guy look threatening, and it's a little too dark overall.

This is my favourite of this challenge so far, i like the tones and the feel of it with the man in the backround. A lot of people will think it is too dark but if they had there monitors set correctly they would see it is perfect lighting for such a mood

Excellent job

This is really good !! Looks like he's back to do more damage .... I like this shot .....but... I do think the lighting on her face could have been a bit more lighter so we could see her pain....
