 This is Gina Hecht with her pet rat Violet. In addition to acting, Gina is a world-class poker player, and my idea for this portrait was to have her "stooge" whispering advice in her ear.

This shoot was the most fun I've had in ages - I happen to love rats, they are amazing, and smart, and funny as heck. And when they put their tiny little hands on mine, it just melts my heart.

Gina's daughter was the wrangler. They have 4 rats, but we only shot with 2 of them (Lilly appears in other takes). To get Violet to pose this way, the daughter concocted some sort of paste made of Violet's favorite treat, and put some in Gina's ear.

The original shot was much wider, showing the table with the cards and the chips, but I cropped it close and decided that was much better.

absolutely LOVE this Johanna .. you are truly a master when it comes to photographing ppl and their pets .. your images always bring me into their world .. so wonderfully ... i am in awe of your photographic prowess and your excellent imagination .. and i know that you have to really have a connection to a deeper part of yourself to get the results you do in your photography ..
