I'm really glad this did so well. I've been trying to get this shot for well over a year. This place is very fickle when it comes to shooting conditions; it's notoriously windy making the water constantly choppy.

For me, all the conditions need to be right to be able to get a good shot here. It has to be a very low tide at sunrise (which only happens a few times a year), the winds need to be extremely still (which also happens just a few times a year), and if these 2 things happen together, then it has to be on the weekend when I'm not working. I really lucked out that it all came together in April.

I took well over 300 shots that morning but went with this one because I liked the space around the boats. I know it was a risk to go with the centered composition but I wanted the scene to look vast. I liked the symmetry between the sky and sea which leads the eye straight to the boats. I did have a few other shots that I was debating on entering and was really flip-flopping between them. A friend, who has always been a good judge on which pictures would do well, said I'd be crazy if I didn't go with this one. He was definitely right...hehe.

Early in the month, I also tried shooting here when it was windy with a higher tide, but didn't get anything good. There was another photographer there and he ended up taking some shots of me walking around in the water shooting the boats. He was kind enough to email me one of the shots.

I keep coming back to this so I might as well comment. Love the minimalism captured yet with angry skies repeated by the natural mirror only possible in the morning. Hawaii is on my bucket list.

That sky is amazing. I love that you broke the rules (centred horizon & subjects dead centre) and made an exceptional image! Also love the way the clouds in the sky & in the reflection lead my eye to the boats. I just want to relax with a good book in one!
