A cold day somewhere. I'm out of new macro right now, so this is from a while back.

Two shots of insects on a daisy. Very windy, hand held. Wow, this is hard!

You are doing very, very well as far as dealing with focus and movement.

Oh, I can see this conversation happening:
Me: "Honey, I want to go to Italy."
Husband: "Why?"
Me: "To take macro photos of bugs!"
Husband: "%^#*@! ... no."
He thinks I waste too much time doing that here; proposing I travel to take pictures of bugs would pretty much guarantee he'd be calling the nice men in the white coats to take me away ;-) |

Got tired of fighting with my macro flash set up so I switched to using a custom bracket and diffuser for my 430 EX Speed Light. I think I am liking it a lot better. Here a few from experimenting with my new lighting set up.

Thanks Robert. I have found that the auto-focus setting is set to "Manual Patience" :)
I shot another one today...moments after clicking, I got the infamous "No CF Card". It was still sitting in my reader. :) Heh heh....

I was asked about my custom bracket. Currently my brother has my XSi so I can't take a photo of my set up. But here are a few links about my set up:
This is a link to guy a by the name of Lord V. He is on Flicker and Dgrin and does some of the most amazing macro photography I have ever seen. The stuff he post on Dgrin is just awesome. The page I am linking you to has a lot of links to different set ups that he uses. Currently he is using a diffuser made from two coke cans. He also has links to his brackets to hold his flash, which is what I followed for mine. Custom bracket and diffusers
This is a link to my next project. Ring Flash
If anyone has any more questions ask and I will try to answer them.

I have a general one. If the lens is set to 1:1, does that mean you could essentially measure the object knowing the size of the size of the sensor? Of course, this assumes that the 1:1 is indeed so.
Perhaps, I should run some calibration shots, just to get an idea, because it would be really cool to measure the tiny things we photograph. |

I am sure that you could. You would have to know the ratio of the sensor to the size of the photograph and it would have to be the full image, not a crop. Think I will have to mess around with this and figure it out. |

Same here. I'm going to take a few shots of a ruler. I can use a micron bar at work too. That may be more accurate. |

Very cool....
I took photos at 1x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x, and 5x on my 60mm of a metric tape measure.
Mean sensor size (calculated) = 22.5 x 15.0 mm (with 0.74 RSD)
Reported sensor size (manuf) = 22.5 x 15.0 mm
NICE!
So, as long as I know the magnification I took the photo at, I can measure the particular features. Very cool.
ETA:
Ok, so I went back to see how small certain features are. For example, I measured a grain of sand less than 100 µm wide! Whoa!
Correction, make that 27 µm (ant leg)
