Two-striped Planthopper (nymph) - Acanalonia bivittata. Sitting on a small butterfly bush (buddleia).
I am spending significant quantities of time on BugGuide.net ;-)
This is close to a 100% crop. A quick glance and this looked like a bump on the stalk with some dandelion seeds caught in it. When I bent down to get a closer look it scurried over to the other side of the stalk. Took me awhile to finally get a decent shot as this guy was definitely camera-shy. Perhaps he was just finally exhausted from all that scurrying ;-)
36mm + 20mm extension tubes, handheld, diffused flash.
PP - cropped, increased contrast, increased saturation on red/orange, slight dodging on bug, resized, sharpened, added border.

ETA: yes, the white fluff is part of the bug. And the adult form looks nothing like this! Looks a lot more like a green leaf, actually. |

Wow, what a truly bizarre-looking little creature. This fella would look equally at home in an underwater scene. Are the little white tufts a part of him? Great catch. |
