Here's a couple more: an obscure object and a colorful little spider. Spider was blowing around in the wind like crazy, this was the only shot even close to sharp.

here the perch is a bit too important, but i've liked the colors...

My son caught a Praying Mantis the other day, I've been itching to photograph him, but wow it's very active and very small, less then 2.5 inches from top to bottom. I finally realized how to keep him entertained enough to hold really you just feed him something to eat. :D

Noob alert!
I have 2 questions.
On my current camera, the lens is not interchangeable. It's fixed. It does have a macro mode, but it doesn't have NEAR the magnification shown on these mantis pix. I have seen the "reversed lens" trick, and I do have a 28mm and 50mm prime lens from my old film kit. Is there any way I can rig something up with the gear I have now? (That was my first question)

With such a shallow depth of field, do you still take the "focus on the eyes" approach, like in human portraiture? (question 2)

P.S. - I prefer a little bit of Tobasco sauce on my crickets.
;-)

There's a good chance that the answer to your first (and perhaps every) question will involve duck tape ... ;-)

If you have threads to attach a filter you may be able to rig up something with a reversing ring and a step-up or -down ring as needed. My camera is also a fixed-lens model, but comes with an adapter which allows the attachment of filters and some accessory lenses, including a close-up lens which makes it possible to shoot macros using the "regular" zoom lens; I used it to get this handheld shot of a bee which fills the frame without any cropping ...

I've fallen a bit behind, I've been busy. But I'll catch up.

Yippers, I'm still flippin & blendin.
I'm also trying to create a little moment of confusion,
when you first look at the flower pic, until you realize
it's a flower.

You have to realize, this is a VERY specialized lens for Macro. Most lens are considered macro if they go 1:1 lifesize at it's closest focusing distance. This lens at it's furthest focus distance is 1:1 and only 4 inches from end of lens. It graduates from 1X to 5X and the focus distance and DOF is unreal small, even at F16(the most it will stop down) very little dof. You also begin to see diffraction creep in around F8-F11 which begins to soften the image, so just stopping it all the way down isn't always the best answer at 5X.

And yes I try to go for the eye, but with manual focus, moving bugs, and very thin DOF it's tough to do and sometimes you take what you can get. I also start to use Live view to help focus once I get up past 2X magnification.

Got my extension tubes today. Makes hand holding a lot harder. All of these are with a 32mm extension tube attached. Was surprised that I could stack all three and auto focus still worked. Just can't hand hold 64mm of extension while in what ever strange position I have to get into to photograph the bugs.

ETA: I did some quick calculations and came to the conclusion that the 70-300 + reversed 50 gives me about 8:1 magnification
