So I was able to spin the the plant around to get a bunch of photos no matter where they went. Could not decide which one I like the best so posting 4 for your enjoyment.

The first one is a small crop to get it to look right (had to do it square to keep the rule of thirds going on). The other three are full frame.

Very nice assassin bug. :D

Thanks Matt. The damn things are so shinny even in the shade they reflect the ambient light. If with so much diffusion that I may as well be shooting without flash they still reflect like crazy. Not giving up on getting the perfect the shot of them yet.

A nice fly was willing to model a bit for me this morning on my laptop. :D All uncropped images at different magnifications on the lens.

Used my cell phone to take some useable photos of my set up for those interested. If you are interested in the quality of photos you can get with this set up go to Flicker and look for the photos by a guy named Lord V. He uses basically the same set up. In a previous post I put a link to where he talks about his different set ups.

Left side of camera, yes that is a cheap diffuser with a paper towel over it for more diffusion

Mini ball head. You need this to adjust position of flash.

Left side showing my bracket. This one moves around a lot so going to make one from bar stock.

Best part about this set up is if you already have a flash it don't cost that much money to make. Most expensive part is the off camera flash sync cord. I got a 3rd party one from the local camera store for $30. If you have a camera (like the 7D) that can trigger a slave flash from the built in flash you can do that also. I was able to accomplish this with my 7D but found it easier to use the sync cord and figure I will find other uses for the cord in the future.

Any question please ask,
Ronnie

Rose hip in morning sunlight. A bit of Topaz Detail, not a lot really. Or so I'm trying to convince myself...
