I hope more can join...I keep trying to keep this alive (thread)...not sure what we are supposed to do for the side challenges but I am sure you can still join (this from the new be on the block).

I think that we load our photos...then we are supposed to comment on the photos that have already been loaded trying to give any advice or praise...and I am going to say that I am very inexperienced so everyone must take any of my comments with a block of salt...ok.....

Now my photo has been up there for a couple of days (and yes I know we all work) but I've only seen a couple of comments so far...so come on...let's all get on the stick....end of the month is coming folks...

i don't understand what really is a Side Challenge, if someone want to explain to me (like a 5 years child!)...

then, if its not too late, could I join in too?
01/27/2009 12:34:40 PM · #54
My understanding of a side challenge.

We have a group of people, who informally post pictures related to the topic of the challenge. The challenge is to ensure we meet the goal. We then comment on the photos in order to improve each other. No 'voting' is included.

That's how I understand it...
01/27/2009 12:47:56 PM · #55
I think that is right...there is only 1 "landscape photo" per month that is required for this side challenge...I am assuming we might be able to do more??? Then I guess we comment on the photos...trying to help each other out to sharpen our skills...I got a comment about the sharpening on mine...I need to learn how to do that better...would appreciate any pointers anyone would have...I am using PSE7...thanks

guess this thread got tucked in the back burner so maybe if we keep it going it might pick up somemore people along the way....

ok, i will post my January landscape in few minutes...

but, it should be taken in this month or is not important? May i link a photo that i've already in my portfolio for example?

I want to join too, if it's not too late.
01/27/2009 01:03:12 PM · #58
I believe the point of the challenge is the photo should be taken within the month indicated. So for January, the landscape should be taken in January. Thus it challenges us to get out once a month at least to take photos.

I have mine taken, just need to finish the edits, and hopefully post tonight!

still have the question about if we can do more than one in any given month??? (greedy thing aren't I)
01/27/2009 01:08:47 PM · #60
Personally, I think it is one a month...
01/27/2009 01:13:58 PM · #61
drats...is there a size requirement? I guess it wouldn't matter just wondering..
01/27/2009 01:18:20 PM · #62
I guess it makes sense to stick to the 720 px limit of the advanced rule set.

ok...I just had noticed that my photo was small than the rest so I wasn't to sure...thanks...and as far as editing goes...anything goes right...not basic editing rules or anything...

my guess is that people are waiting to see what they are going to enter in the Jan free study, before posting it here. Or is that just me?????

what i do :- unsharp mask with.... amount = 50, radius = 1 and threshold = 1
usually between 3 and six times.

you can mask parts that don't need sharpening skies etc (not allowed in basic editing) if required.

I would not mind! I think we don't have enough shots anyway! Lets say we may do 1-3. What do you think?

i mean go to unsharp mask and enter the numbers i suggested. click ok.
then go back to unsharp mask again, the same numbers should still be there, click ok again.
repeat as many times as you think needed!!
the point of doing it this way is that lots of little steps are better than one big step!

just a heads up for you.... there is a very fine line between getting hammered for the image being 'too soft' and being hammered for the image being 'over sharpened'.

I didn't create this side challenge, but would love to have someone with your photographic skills participating. I think it's still open to anyone who would like to participate.

what do you mean...like of like some have said watch out when using borders as a lot of the member will vote you down for using a border? so some of the member will shoot you down for using to much sharpening...

Right, I'm going to assume that I'm allowed to play, so here's my one for Jan:

I haven't been keeping up with the forums lately due to a lack of internet at home. I have updated the OP and believe I have added everyone - give me a shout if I missed anyone.

I will keep sign-ups open until the start of next month, as long as people still have the opportunity to get a shot for January. After then it would not be possible to get 12 monthly images - defeating the purpose of the side challenge.

That sums the idea of a side challenge up pretty well.

So, since this is my first side challenge...where do we post the pictures and what are we supposed to do? Can you give me a little more instructions as I am soooo new at this....geez that sounds so dumb..

Posting the pictures here is fine.

Me, again...should we not be including our PP steps in the shot and a few details? And "what are the editing" rules? Are these along the "basic", "advanced"...or "whatever you want to do?" Sorry I've never done a side challenge before...

I think it would be best to limit the challenge to "advanced" editing (I feel it should be a photography side challenge and not a Photoshop one). It would be good if everyone could post editing details and other information relevant to their image - equipment used, location (maybe even GPS coordinates so people can look the location up on Google Earth), time of day, etc... Side challenges are about learning.

I think that it would be best to limit it to one image per month - with the idea of shooting the images for a calendar. Since this is a year long challenge the thread will eventually fill up with images.

You can post a photo that is already in your portfolio if it was taken this month. The whole point of the side challenge is to take a landscape photo each month.

Agree...

Decided to make it up to 800x800.

Most people are most likely holding out due to the January Free Study. Since my only wide-angle lens broke the first week of January I myself might be using my January landscape for the Free Study. Time to learn how to take landscapes with a telephoto lens :P
