I hope my January entry isn't too late. I've been pretty busy (as you can imagine from the photo :) This was taken right outside my front door on Friday afternoon:

Ok, I guess I will get brave here and ask that you do some edits...as the whole point of this is to learn how to improve not only our photography skills and composition but how to improve our editing skills as well, I am trying to learn the sharpening technique right now...with some very helpful hints and advice from some of the team members. This way if our editing skills are taking to far...then the "team" will tell us...as I took the sharpening to far on my last edit...I am not sure how far to go with it...but this is how I learn what "the forum" likes....

My entry for February, another very cold Canadian night down by Lake Ontario.

Pretty nice shot. With a strong impact on me. I like the night, the snow by the lake and everything. I d say that you should clone out the signs on the right lower corner. It would be also interesting to see the original shot and have some indications on the pp steps as well the camera adjustments!

really liked the idea of posting the GPS coordinates of our shots...not sure if I will be able to get them...any suggestions as to how I can get them if I don't have a GPS?

I am in for February with this image....used a circular polarizing filter, 2 seconds, F11, ISO 100, used a tripod of course, early morning before the sunlight got to the waterfall. The waterfall is about 75 feet high. Because of the terrain I could not get further away from the falls without trees getting in the way so I don't have as much background in the image as I would like. There is ice on each side of the waterfall. This is in a Wildlife Management Area near where I live, foot traffic only, 6.7 mile hike to get this picture.

Per request from Ja-9, here is my edited version. PP steps noted on the photo page.

Updated the participant list. PM me if I have missed anyone.

I've added you to the list. Maybe get two images for February - then you will still have 12 images at the end of the year.

Where is everyone's PP notes...no one seems to be entering them...or any other information...I am trying to learn from what ya'll do in your PP notes...when they are left out I am guessing (and getting better at it...) but, it would be helpful to know what lens, and just basic information...

Agree...

Decided to make it up to 800x800.

Can you please put these 2 items...in the "rules" area...

I have added a note in the "rules" about post processing and other information.

Now that the free study voting is over...

January

I may come back and revise my cropping. Since I want to make a 2010 calendar from the 12 images it might be best to stick to a single aspect ratio and orientation for all the images. What does everyone else think about this?

wonderful shot, I probably won't use my shots for a calendar...but you can use any you like...I am on this boat for the "comments and advice" I want to learn how I can improve my shots and editing techniques...that is why I am really pushing the PP notes and camera info (btw your notes are super good!!)...I have already started making some "improvements" (here and there). Thanks again for starting this challenge. How many of the people that signed up have submitted a photo yet? Just curious...

worked on this one more time, as I was able to see what you were talking about the "white halo"...I think this might be it...added gradient - reflected/reversed and I lowered the sharpening...you will notice that this is a different picture (bird placement) but it was essentially the same photo...

Well I like the "new picture" better. I did some PP (mostly levels and curves). Did not try saturation cause I am color blind!
Here it is hope you like it!

I've been a bit rubbish with side challenges and have barely been out with the camera in Jan, this is from South Wales, Forest of Dean last week whilst I was there watching a rally. I'll add this as my Jan submission and hopefully I'll get out in some reasonable weather in Feb for my next shot :)

ps. will comment on all the images so far in this over the next few days :)

Pretty nice. I d love to see the 3 originals. Never tried this technique. I v also heard that one may use some DNG filters for the same effect.

I'll post the originals up later :)

eta, yeah, dng filter will have the same effect in theory, it's actually something I want to try to use in this side challenge as I have a couple but never actually used them, only used the orange gradient filter a few times for sunsets etc
