That's just shitty if you ask me. I'm glad not everyone is using that style of scoring images.

How's that? #1, it's almost a perfect bell curve over the scores.
#2. Most here feel 5 is average. This is pretty darn close to that.
#3. If you take my average 4.8557 * 194 images = 942 points awarded. Remove the 14 points for those that clearly DNMC = 928 points and leaves 180 "good" images. 928/180 = 5.1556. Now I'm OVER the average score.
So I don't understand what is so crappy about honestly rating the images. Do you prefer to lie?

Hi,
I think I am going to put my oar in the water for another subject. Clealy, those in the forum and contributing to this thread have stong feeling about voting. I wonder, what percentage of the images that rate your vote, rate a comment. My poor fingers are being worked to the bone to give comments. I haven't voted on 190 or even 38, yet, but I believe I have commented on every one.
I would really appreciate your thougths on the subject as my old fingers are really suffering.
Thanks.
oh... PS. Do you ever note the impact of folks changing their votes? I acknowledged that my geekhood drove me to pay close attention to my scores and I noticed my average moving around (down, unfortunately) without any increased votes. Hum, just curious.

Actually, given the range is 1 to 10, the expected average would be 5.5, and just because your scores look like a bell curve doesn't necessarily make it so.
If you found most of the submissions lacking, just say so and leave it at that. I'd suspect my own image wasn't one of your higher scoring ones, but I don't let myself get too worked up over overly harsh (or overly generous) individual voters. Did you leave feedback some of the images you found so awful? |

Hi Bill,
I have also noticed my avg trending lower without the addition of new votes, which makes me assume people are lowering their votes as well.

I agree the average is truly 5.5, but around here, people say 5, since they cannot cast a 5.5 vote -- something has to be "average" :)
How can the scores look like a bell curve and not actually be one? And giving something a 5 or a 4 vote doesn't mean it's lacking, it just means that's what it is. All the ones that were "awful" as you put it (earned 1s or 2s), did get told -- again, these were DNMC, so that's the best they could get.

Your curve isn't symmetrical; your peak is below average. Just because you have more of a clump off the extremes doesn't make it a bell curve, and your justification for your distribution of votes isn't really helped by this. Your votes are what they are, regardless of how they're distributed, and people need to accept that. You won't make everyone happy, but that shouldn't be your aim. |

who cares how someone votes as long as they are consistent in the challenge?
If someone's average votes from out to a 5 and someone elses come out to an 8 and they maintained the same reasoning for all the votes, then the winner still comes out on top.
I try to give out only 3 tens per voting - these are my first second and third place voting. Some people give out more tens, I just choose not to.
Does that make me a bad voter? No.
The funny thing about art is subjective. And with so many good photographers around here, it's easy to see why some things get a 5 even though they're pretty darn good. |

I don't give out 5's. On the first pass I give only 4's and 6's. Its either above average or below average. On the 2nd pass I bump the 6's up. I don't go back and bump the 4's down. Everyone gets at a least a 4 for subjecting themselves to the process. |

I've seen it go both ways. Sometimes up, sometimes down. Some other non-scientific observations...
voters are often crabby on Mondays and this will start you off with a lower score than you end up with...
When one of the respected DPC Celebrities posts how they are voting it seems that many follow suit... good or bad.
There are always heated discussions when it comes to voting. Some DPC voters take challenge descriptions VERY seriously and are very rigid about the DNMC vote even when the photo is technically stunning and/or a work of art. Of course, some would argue that some DNMC photo's show up regularly with ribbons. :)

As well they should. Otherwise Challenge Descriptions are 100% useless. For those DNMC that are stunning works or art, there is a free study each and every month. Voila, problem solved.

Love6 I had one wonderful comment (but no comment from you) the Try Upping Votes was just a silly word play on the challenge title.
Mine is what it is and I am happy with the score
I dont know whether I have said before but I do love your voting patterns and your enthusiasm, for me you are one of the people who encapsulates what DPC is (or should be) about
In fact you are a Tremendously Uplifting Voter
Thank you |

Looks like this one might be heading for my PB line on my page. Was hoping it would take first place on the line but doesn't look like that will happen. I had hoped it would do better but I don't get 6.xxx votes very often so I've gotta be happy with that. I had thought this would do better though.

aww thanks :) I went to school for art-and my teachers actually explained a lot of their critique methods to me-since I was curious how they provided constructive feedback without crushing their 'students' I really try my best to remember everything they each taught me- I sure as heck know one of them was no good at it at all and I quit that class because of it; EFFORT put into something deserves -some- form of reward or comment of encouragement... some constructive feedback -- I mean we all joined for a reason right? we want to improve our art in the 'public' eye? or some tips for how to achieve an overall appealing image while not loosing ourselves and our own artistic views and not entirely conforming to the 'maintsream' right? :) each person has some hope for a 'ribbon' even if they already have 30 or more ;) its always nice to help others too tho- IE: if I know something that someone else doesn't know, perhaps they'll know something that _I_ don't know and in turn one hand washes the other ;) -- its how I got my first tattoo... I drew an angel for a friend of mine (i'm not too shabby at sketching when I want to) and she gave me a tattoo...

I totally, wholeheartedly and wholesomely agree to your thoughts. Thats the reason DPC exists and is growing coz its a place where 'mentors' are more abundant than the 'judges'. Judging is easy it just needs a click, mentoring requires commitment and time to encourage a person who knows less than you but is keen to learn. |
