Gordon,
Your bananas don't look happy. I sense that they are emotionally distraught and they also look neglected. These are senior citizen bananas and they are withering away in the dark depths of some rest home called "Shady Acres" on a dead end road. Let's not abandon these banananananas.. Let's peel and slice and put them in a nice cheery bowl of corn flakes. This will revitalize these bananas and make them happy again. I know, deep in my heart, that you did not intend to neglect these bananas, so there is hope for you yet, grasshopper :)

Well, John, since you have posted a link to your photo of the railroad trestle several times I take it you would welcome a critique. Normally I simply just say "Great shot" or "Perfect," as I am not highly skilled in photography. Over the past six or eight weeks though, as I have read the comments of numerous pictures, both mine and others, I have learned a great deal about how to criticize photos. I would like to take a stab at yours.
First of all, the selection of this old bridge is a natural for black and white.(IMHO) However, you may have noticed, the rails seem to get smaller the farther away they are in the picture. You should have corrected this, as we all know, the rails MUST stay the same distance apart or the train would derail. (not my opinion sir, FACT) Also, it would have been much better if the trestle had been made of wood rather than steel and you should have taken the shot from the other end of the bridge. I notice there is not a train in sight either. There should have been! How could you have left out such a feature? Not just any train either. MUST be a steam locomotive. One with billowing smoke and huge blasts of steam blowing out the sides. You should have taken the picture at night too, with the engine's headlight shinning and making a beam of light in a slightly foggy, spooky night. This bridge is soooo typical too. You should find one with a curve or two, and a hill.
You know John, when I first saw the photo I really, really liked it. But now that I have critiqued it I am not so sure anymore. You should go back and re-shoot it as I suggest and see if you don't like it better. Please resubmit when you have corrected all your errors. I'll bet you will get better reviews next time. Of course these are just my opinions. Other folks may have a different idea of the quality. We all see things a little differently. Better luck in the next challenge.
You still have work to do John-----Leave Gordon alone and get to work fleahopper. |

That comment is from a 16 year old from iceland that has yet to submit a picture (although I think he my be in the one). I would not worry about it too much. Maybe it was a long winter and he was tired of seeing white. It was a fine photograph.
Originally posted by Dangerous_blues: IMO this comment had nothing to do with the any of the things you noted, and as you will see if you actually read my whole post, I have no problem with attacking a photograph on technical merit. Mine was lacking in several areas technically.
You simply missed my point.
But thank you for the link.

so even if you dressed him up as a banana and he looked lonely and maybe a little like Elvis...we still shouldn't pick him up and take him home....is that where you're going with this? |

Thank you for your support. I knew all along it wasn't a good shot. Just got crabby about that stupid comment! But, I am glad at least one person didn't hate it.

I feel that photos should be scored on how well they fit the challenge. It's up to the photographer to realize that and also realize that most people don't spend ten minutes on a vote. The photographer should be the one to decide how easy to draw the connection. I would definitely vote higher on those entries that have slow connections but not impossible. The guy falling off the horse happens to be a quite nice and semi-easy connection to the "On the Road" challenge. I take challenges at face value and "On the Road" can have a myriad meanings. |

I agree and think that some people are always going to be more abstract than others--which is cool. I like stuff that makes me think. But I also think that if you are going to take the time to vote on someone's picture--at least take the time to know what you are voting on! I never really thought about people (not) doing that until this last challenge. The score was not the problem at all---it was the fact that some people actually thought that the surfboard was a girl!?! It just made me realize that there are people out there that are just throwing votes around without really having a clue as to what they are voting on! Ah well.

I think it's time to revive this thread.
I know we all interpret things differently, but having just gone through all the submissions for the "Something New" challenge I was surprised at the number of images that IMHO do not fit the theme. Let's try to follow the following suggestions.
Originally posted by jmsetzler: I have a suggestion for everyone who posts photographs to these challenges... When you have your photograph ready to submit, bounce it off of some third party viewer before you post. Let them look at your photo BEFORE you tell them what it is for. After they have seen your photo, ask this person if they think it fits into a subject category of 'on the road' or whatever the challenge topic may be.

Please don't revive such a long thread... starting a new one would be more appropriate. You can link to this one in your post. |
