A couple I took the other day. Finally got a reflector and am learning how to use it. Only natural light through a window and the reflector.

I finally finished up some edits from a senior portrait session with Katlyn...

Comments and/or advice are greatly appreciated.

Just realized that I was added on the list. I'll try to get some portraits up, and new one's taken soon. Just finishing up this week of school, so I an get on my break :)

Nusbaum,
Very nice work with the Senior Portraits. You certainly captured her very nicely in the shots, and composition. Great job :)

You've probably already received some great input, but I thought I would toss in yet another opinion.

First I wanted to compliment you on the fact that your subjects all appear comfortable and their expression are warm and open. Your connection with the subjects is very important and it seems that you are very successful in that area.

Now a couple techniques that I think might help...
- Move your subject farther away from the background
- Lower your point a view to their eye level so they aren't looking up
- Move the flash more to the side so you get a bit more modeling from the light. (notes didn't highlight lighting, but the catchlight is fairly small and centered so I'm thinking on camera flash?)

I cannot wait to see you next set.

Had the kids of some friends of ours over today while their mom was having a baby this morning.

And please - PLEASE - never teach your kids to "Say Cheese". It can go really really bad.

I wanted to throw my hat in the ring since my pictures never seem to get comments (poor me, haha). I am feeling more comfortable with portraits these days since getting my lighting set up in my basement. Picking up a new lens helped too! Here is my family all with different style portraits. I would love some comments, thanks!

I have two that I did today that I think might start a kind of series with experimenting with using direct sunlight, muted colors and textures.

Ye ole sunset shots...

[thumb]625192[/thumb]

Edit to add execution notes:

I used my 50mm prime (there was not enough room to use the 85mm).
f4.5 (to put light on the faces and to cream the bg).
1/320 s - I metered the sky and then adjusted down a couple of stops.
430EX on camera left with shoot through brolly
580EX on camera (with bracket and Fong)
No master/slave ratios set with this one.

I should have (1) toned down the reds on her face, (2) toned down the sun highlight a bit, and (3)added a soft diffuse glow for skin radiance. Perhaps I will re-edit later.

Hi folks, only just recently become interested in portraits, but not yet really had a bash at it! Looking to possibly concentrate a lot of my time towards this genre of photography (massive fan of Steve McCurry!). Would appreciate some advice on this candid portrait of my cousins wife. I know it's not fantastically wonderfull, but any advice on composition, camera technique, post-processing etc, would be much appreciated.

Reflectors. No flash. Not sharp, but C'est la vie.

Another very nice shot, Tim. I like the pose, and the lighting is, as it almost always is, very nice. Not sure about the chair though. It's a little difficult to tell what it is initially. Once I spotted the chipped paint on Aidan's left side, then I knew what it was.

I think you did a fine job. They could be snazzed up a bit with editing, and I would have liked the bg to be less in focus. But the lighting seems right on to me.

If they were mine I might create a slightly blurred and darkened vignette affect.

For me the last shot is the most flattering.

As she appears to be a slightly larger lady (no offence intended), wearing a chunky knit sweater conspires to make her look larger than perhaps she is, in fact, in the second picture she looks like she is leaning forward, almost as though the weight of her bust is pulling her down . . however, in the third shot the gentle neckline and shaped necklace (along with the crop) make for a far more gentle and flattering picture.

Nice lighting, and focus. A vignette might be good and whitening her eyes a little might be good - hope this helps.

Here's a portrait I did of my nephew just recently. It was the first full-body shoot I've ever done. Any pointers? Having only sheets for a backdrop and not a lot of room to work with, I decided I'd handle them in PP. I also wish we had a different colored hat, but oh well.

Oddly, the color balance was very off (quite blue) on the full body shots vs the headshots only. Anybody know why - does lots of black in the frame fool Auto-WB? Shooting in RAW, however, this was fixed without consequence.

Before and after editing:

Cheers,
-Jeff

From a shoot yesterday afternoon. I like the relationship between the out of focus palm frond shapes in the background, her eyelashes and the same repeated shapes in her fringe. The outdoor light from the cloudy sky really illuminates her face as she looks up, too.

No analysis on this one... I'm just going to sit back and enjoy it. Beautiful work!

I found Judi's shot very inspirational. Was trying to see if we could mimic it. We're a long ways off, but maybe in another 7 years :)
