i've still got a ways to go before i catch up with you guys in volleyball...

[thumb]589605[/thumb] [thumb]589602[/thumb]
one thing that makes it difficult for me is that i'm always moving around the venue in order to have varying backgrounds and perspectives. since i'm not always shooting from the same spot, i'm constantly subjected to changing lighting conditions. |

Quick ones from tonight, then off to bed for a full day of assignments tomorrow. Worst light field I've seen all year and a pretty rotten game to boot. 2 teams who had not won a game yet this year. I left with one minute to go and it was 40-12.

I shot some football for 20 minutes with the chief photographer today, and didn't get a single usable shot. She got... well, one, but it's better than none.
I guess it takes me a while to get into the groove of the game and figure out what's going on. I got a shot of a guy who got tackled and rolled into me, but it's out of focus for some reason. I think it's from using that center AF point, I'm switching back to all 45.
Going to shoot my first day football game tomorrow at 4, pretty excited about not having to use flash or crank the ISO to 3200. |

I'd like to take a stab at why your shot in question may have been out of focus...
One of the first things I learned about shooting sports is that the AI-SERVO focus mode is extremely useful. I don't know what lens you are shooting with, but what I do know is that a subject moving towards you will get inside your depth of field on a telephoto lens quicker than you can imagine. When that focus point locks on your camera, you only have a fraction of a second to fire the shot before the athlete gets inside of the acceptable depth of field range. I also use the center AF point only when shooting sports. Another good idea is, if you have the capability to do so, set the focus limiter on the lens to the longer distance. My lens has the choice of full range or 3 meters. On the 3 meter setting, the camera won't focus inside of the 3-meter range, but that setting allows the camera to auto-focus much faster...

I was using the 70-200 2.8. I always use AI servo, with the * button in the back actually. I think he might have hit the minimum focusing distance since it was at 70, especially if I had it set to 3m-inf. Someone changed it to that since last week, and I changed it back sometime during the time I was shooting, but I don't know if it was before or after.
Anyway, the game today was soccer rather than football, which I found a lot easier to shoot. I did go ahead and stick with the center AF point for this game, and it worked well this time. All 45 seemed to work better for night football, though.
200 never seems long enough, I have to crop almost everything. The last one is almost a 100% crop, and the light dropped right before I shot it so it was under a little. |

Ah... I forgot about this thread. I had fun shooting some motorbike and bicycle shots Friday during lunch break. I've already posted these in another thread but just to get a different kind of sport into this thread I'll post a couple here.

maybe to give some people ideas about subject placement i suggest looking at this photographers site, maybe to get away from the same old close up/ single subject images and add a little more art to it
he is very well respected in his field of work

You are more then welcome to post in this thread what you feel is missing. If you think there needs to be more extreme sports by all means go shoot some and post them. As far as adding art to sports. IMHO while there is a place for it, it wont sell to an editor of a magazine or newspaper and that is who I have to sell to, parents are a secondary market and I've never heard someone ask me to add some "art" to their kids shots I take.

I don't do much in the way of sports ... but the areas in which I am shooting, I'm generally shooting for the parents. We take thousands of shots at a tournament and post them online. And the only way the parents are going to recognize their kids and want the pictures is if the people in them are up close and "powerful" within the image. So, unlike MattO, I am specifically shooting for the parents and thats why my sports images tend to be tight.
That said ... I do have to agree with you. There are some amazing images on that site. I'd love to be at a venue where I could include more of the surroundings and make an "artful" picture, even if nobody appreciates it but me. :-)
Thanks for the post.

Those are pretty cool. But I also go to games and meets and sporting events specifically to shoot the kids for their parents....on request or in general. They want the close ups of what their child is doing. Thats what sells, and thats what I give them. |

okay so i suppose my post was a little bias to my sport and way of shooting and it didnt even cross my mind that your shooting for profit.
so i apologize
i just feel a little out of place being the action sports manority haha |

action sports, fortunately, is one of the few areas where interesting lighting and composition is favored more heavily in what gets published.
shooting for a profit is way different than trying to add your vision and your way of seeing to a certain image. parents don't want art of their kids. it just boils down to this...do you want to make yourself happy with your images and only maybe get paid? Or do you want to make other people happy and shoot straightforward stuff and definitely get paid?
The successful photogs combine the two. Even Sports Illustrated has some pretty magnificent, artful shots of mainstream sports, but you rarely see that in any newspaper...save the new york times or chicago tribune.

So ... while shooting sports for profit ... do you ever turn around and shoot some of the candid stuff that's going on around you? I do. And am amazed that I often end up selling the candids too! :-)
Here are a few from last night's soccer game:
