there were some superb images in the story challenge.. either my voting is becoming more middle of the road, or this and the Team Suck thread is having an effect. i'm plumping for the latter....
soooo, the x-prizes for unrecognised genius for the Every Picture Tells a Story...
  goc this is superb, the darks and lights, the stunning gold colour. the harsh angles and flat areas of shadow. and of course the bird and the anarchy. the strict regimen of the structure reinforces the concept of conformity, while the tiny bird and faint anarchy symbol are the just the right amount of corrupting influence. a lovely image that can be read on many levels.
  liberty I really liked this one - the shallow depth of field, the deep tones, and the melancholy, subtle story implied in the mundane objects. the composition is dynamic yet quiet, and the whole thing has a warm, sad feeling. well done indeed.
   tonyv i'm not always a fan of selective desat, but it works really well here. was i influenced by the fact that it's obviously africa? maybe. but the tones and composition really work well here, the emptiness in the middle of chaos just make it. the implied line leading from coke, through cat to dog energise the whole piece, in a quiet and slightly menacing way.
 sempermarine i really like word play, and the fact that i could read the title in two ways. the dark tones and blue work against the concept of light so well, accentuating the not only the bar of light on his face, but also the dark emotion of the image. not only does he look like he's crying light (the interpretation i actually didn't get on first viewing) but the jagged edges in the light remind me of sharp teeth, calling up the boy who cried wolf.
 hotpasta a lovely, quiet, yet not at all subtle image. the tones, the deep melancholy, all work so well. a true portrait or the animal, and of yearning.
 JuliBoc Juli had to get a top mark for using Hemingway's heartbreaking short story (For Sale: Baby shoes, never used), and the fact that she made top twenty in the rankings is icing on the cake.

Just a thought for everyone giving out ribbons.
I really like how posthumous gives them out as a comment before the challenge is over, rather than select after the voting is over.
I think its a really nice touch. |

I think Don does it wonderfully. however, the criteria for mine are both high scores from me and low placing in the final results. therefore, i take all of those in my top scoring range and start at the bottom of the results for those. for instance, last week the blue ribbon for games was in my top scorers. i decided that the blue was recognition enough, so she didn't get a ribbon, although she was mentioned. therefore, i have to wait until the results are posted. but i'm still oging from my top scores, which don't change.
does that make any sense???

Every Picture Tells a Story
I was befuddled by this challenge, and disheartened by the results. Sometimes, voters can overcome their usual criteria for the sake of what a particular challenge requires, but not this time! Only 3 of the top 10 actually tell a story. Only 2 of the ribbons. Slick, empty photos got their usual high scores. Humbug!

(note to xianart: keep on fighting the good fight! there's a bit of a dichotomy on this thread over whether we are highlighting the underrated or simply rewarding the best images. I think it's best to keep it unresolved, allow both ideas to flourish. Personally, I try to pick simply the best, but I do take it into consideration when I believe a brilliant photo is going to go unnoticed.) |

That makes a lot of sence, actually. Both of your philosophies do.

Finally getting around to posting my faves from the free study. Didn't get a chance to vote or even look at healthy food or every picture tells a story until after voting. Almost 1000 images to vote on w/ sepia and free study!
