This is a common problem with newbies. As you advance in the art of photography, you will learn to handle this particular issue.

Well I'm just saying.
There was 1 in silky smooth
3 in usernames II
3 in shapes

I just think that is a bit too much smoke in a weeks time. You know what else I'm tired of... seeing blueberry's or whatever thrown into a bowl of milk or whatever.

I guess I think people should try and be a bit more original and come up with a picture of their own.

Or... Maybe I should redo a picture of someones and call it mine. What do you all think???

Maybe I should have this moved to RANT??? hahha

So how long do you have to be on the site to not be considered a newbie???

It has nothing to do with time...

I have to admit I was sort of thinking the same thing about smoke but, I didn't create a post about it cause it just barely got to me. I guess when you see someone do something that won a ribbon then you try to see if you can do it too. Besides I think there's a tutorial on it so maybe that's just proof that the tutorials are getting used. I mean we are all here to learn aren't we?
What I'm saying is I see your point but, I wouldn't get all up in arms about it either (not saying you are).

So because you have entered 127 challenges and I have entered 32 that doesn't give me the right to rant on about people doing the same pictures as someone else? I just think it's funny that shortly after mobster posts his //www.dpchallenge.com/tutorial.php?TUTORIAL_ID=59 there are 7 pictures of smoke.

i think what john mean is, if you've been looking long enough at photos from various photographers, eventually you'll realize that almost all things have been done repeatedly, and thus "smoke" is just one of those and there's nothing overly-done about them (because everything else is just the same). just a guess, maybe john would like to clarify.

It has nothing to do with the number of challenges anyone has entered either. I believe that anyone serious about photography has to learn to look at photos as if it was the only one like it they have ever seen. Until that skill is developed, you tend to judge something other than the photograph when the photograph is what needs to be judged.

I'm not really all up in arms but I do get a bit disapointed about people doing the same crap over and over again. Now I understand that it's different people but jsut because someone creates a HOW TO. Doesn't mean that everone has to post the same thing at once.

I do give props to the winner of the smoke. It is a nice image but it's not the first time I have seen a smoek picture so I wasn't really amused about it.

If that is the case then yes I have a lot to learn. I have never thought about it like that but then again how many people on this site actually do.

When I look at an image I do try and understand the photographer's point of view and why they shot what they did but some are just a little crazy.

yeah, and you know what I'm really sick of? People taking photos of sunsets in landscape challenges. Really where is the creativity in that? Its been done before and there is no way you can improve

I think you are being a tad harsh - I don't see any problem with smoke pictures in a shapes challenge, or any other overdone cliche for that matter.

Judge the photo

Rarely will you see on the front page an original idea. Once in a blue moon yes but 99% of the time it's an adaptation of an old idea. The longer I'm here the more I realize that some people aren't as creative/original as I originally thought. Best thing to do is just seek your own path and don't worry about what others are doing.

yeah I'm pretty much off the high horse and over it. I just needed some caffeine.

Okay - because there ARE quite a few, I'll feel safe in owning up to one of them possibly being mine. But the god honest truth is that I never saw the tutorial that you mention was recently posted & I never even skimmed the Silky Smooth challenge. I really thought - "Hey, I haven't see a smoke challenge entry in a while & I've always wanted to try it..."

I actually had 2 other entries I really liked & could have put it in. You should have seen the look on my face when the site came back up and there was a smoke shot ribbon winner, then several in each of the open challenges. Arrgh! I had no idea this week at DPC was going to look like a Cheech & Chong movie...

So a simple plea, vote on the merits of the photo. When I feel like I'm getting sick of certain shots showing up I try to put things in perspective by saying - "Okay, what if I had created this image - would I be proud of it?" and then I vote accordingly...

Shawn

Joe, that's good, because it means I don't have to mention shots of burning matches ;D

Theres no such thing as a new idea, at least not for the most part...

So what if there is a lot of smoke pics? there are a lot of pictures of mountains and lots of pictures of sunsets and lots of pictures of animals and lots of pictures of... well, you get the idea.
I, for one, find it nice that there is something different on the front page for a change(not that I'm biased or anything :P)
Some people like to take pictures of sunsets (not that there is anything wrong with that), I however like to pictures of smoke, and I had planed to enter some in both the shapes challenge and the silky smooth challenge, but simply didn't have time.

anyway, I'm rambling so I'll shut up now.

Edit: if you look at my profile you will see that my three highest scoring pics all have smoke in them.

yeah but that was more of a test to see if I could pull that off, and let me tell you that it was more set up then just lighting an inscent and snappng a pic. Besides during the time I did my match I was the only one in that challenge and actually the only one that did a match for over a month prior too and after the challenge.

And shawn don't think that I won't vote fairly on your image if you do own one. I'm not like that. And just for the GP of it I will judge, comment, and vote on each smoke picture in every challenge.
