I'm about to put this thread on ignore, but I agree with what you've said here. It was a bad prank and it went horribly wrong. I think it's one that will never be repeated, though.
Anyway, just remember if ya keep pickin' at a booboo it never heals.

Bingo to all of it.
I think Langdon and the SC understand it was a bad idea, and I hope they don't do it again.

I'm all for a good prank and have no shortage of a sense of humor, but I think the amount of site sponsored pranks running all at once was excessive and what happened in the Vanished challenge was unprecedented (far as I know). A prank that evokes an emotional reaction for a short time (i.e. scores, WPL rules, etc.) seems fine, but a prank that causes people to spend a considerable amount of time and/or money for nothing is not, IMO.
Regarding all the "it's just a joke" type comments, if you were not affected by it, did not spend considerable time on it, and/or did not have a viable entry anyway, I respectfully ask you to consider your next effort for a challenge (or your last effort) and imagine that when you go to submit it, you find out the submissions ended early and you missed out and wasted your time. Would you find it amusing? If so, fine, but respect that others were annoyed by it, including those who appreciate a good prank. This just seems like a bad prank at the expense of some people's time and some damage to the site's credibility, IMO.

The thing is the Vanish Challenge prank DIDN'T cost anybody time or money. The only thing that prank did was cost some people the opportunity to win a virtual ribbon and last time I checked you don't get to recoup your time or your costs if you win one. Geez. Everyone knew full well they were wasting their time shooting a wine glass, sock, lolipop and ice. We all do anytime we spend a moment on this site. I don't see how that changed one bit with this prank except bring this fact to light.
Now granted that's not to say people shouldn't feel a bit unhappy about it but that's what happens when one gets pranked. Before this prank happen I thought I had a shoe-in for my 10th straight 6+ score in the free study but it appears now that won't happen thanks to this prank. I know this because I've gotten a pretty good handle these days on predicting my scores. Unless there is a possibility for DNMC or I'm shooting a style I am not comfortable with, I know my score will be over a 6. Am I a little unhappy about all of this? Sure as I also spent time shooting this among other things that I didn't enter. However, when I put all of this in perspective it doesn't mean a whole lot at least to me.

get over it! if you really spent so much time and effort on the shot, then you must have an absolutely amazing image on your hands! why don't you post some of your fantastic outtakes and show us all what we missed? otherwise, it happened, it's done, move on with your life and stop obsessing over your missed opportunity to win a virtual ribbon. |
If you'd look around the forums you'd see that "outtakes" HAVE been posted by 4 or 5 people.

Personally I think if you did actually spend a lot of time and money entering a vanish challenge on April Fools' day then it really is more fool you. And you probably should be angry. You should be angry at yourself for letting yourself fall for it in a big way.

It cost people dear. Just like someone looking for the next fix, they gathered the required payment(photos) and were all set to make a deal to feed that insatiable habit(The Update Button Drug), then the deal was whipped away from them, leaving them to suffer cold turkey with no fix! No cost??
Although I did state in another thread that I wouldn't be entering any speed challenge called Vanish on April 1st.

This one ran on April Fool's Day in 2005, and went to full completion with 110 entries. Very similar in nature being a 24 hour speed challenge with special rules/restrictions.

FWIW, the required items were meant to be things that were widely available and/or inexpensive so people wouldn't waste money on the challenge, and they were intentionally difficult to combine into an effective composition to limit the number of people who would even try.
The lollipop was included so that we could show a gallery of "suckers" when the challenge disappeared (I didn't think it would actually go into voting). Congrats to the few people (10!) who managed to beat the odds!

Yup. I agree. Time wasted is wasted. If you thought it was a waste of time to assemble a sock, some ice, a wine glass and a lollipop, then it was a waste of time--with or without a challenge and whether or not you spent your time that way.
Would I feel miffed if the challenge had been pulled out from under my feet? Yes. I don't like pranks. I don't like being pranked. I don't like pranking. So I avoid pranks whenever I can....but I still expect them to sneak up on my from time to time and I try to laugh them off because I've learned I'd rather laugh than cry.
(Sorta like the time I slipped down a flight of wooden stairs in stocking feet holding a wine glass...the wine glass survived and my butt was bruised for over a month. It hurt so much when I hit bottom I couldn't cry! No tears hit my cheek before the laughter hit my lips.)

Oh I'm sure you and others feel differently. It's just my opinion if that wasn't clear. I am of the mindset that people shoot for the challenges when they have spare time that can be wasted. I guess I can't believe that people would forgo more important things just for these challenges. I'm sorry if that upsets you.

I don't get your point. Nobody said they were forgoing more important things for shooting for this (or any) challenge.
Ask anyone that "wasted" their "spare" time if they wouldn't have rather "wasted" it in some other manner. Sure, putting together a photo for a challenge is fun and takes time - but if it's all for a lark (no chance to upload your finished product), the time could have been better spent, that's all. |

You can still upload it to your portfolio or upload it to the April FS which also happens to be running under expert editing. The time was already being wasted so I don't see how it was wasted more because you couldn't enter it in a challenge or in this case a specific challenge.

I'd much rather use my spare time for some purpose than to use it for no purpose. The fun of participating in a community, the fun of thinking creatively, the fun of shooting and editing, and the fun of seeing reactions, are all what makes being here worth using even 1/1000 of a second of my spare time.
Having a challenge yanked ruins all of that.
Spare time doesn't mean time not worth using in a manner of our choosing.
Bah. Enough said.

Alot of people will recognize the items, it probly wont score as well because people tend to score Free study harder. The truth is scoring shouldnt change in FS just placement.
Eitherway not only could it draw a lesser score hurting your average it also deprives you of doing a competent FS entry.

They are in this thread, since they weren't really "outtakes", riot started a special thread for them. I think there are 3 there, Art Roflmao had one there but has since removed it.

It's still a strange challenge. Third place out of ten (no complaints!) gives me a 78% score (????) |

The way to calculate a percentile is to ask: of the entries besides yours, what percentage did you beat? There were 9 entries other than yours that were legitimate, and your shot beat 8 of them. 8/9=78%
That's why the top scoring shot gets a percentile of 100%. Otherwise, you'd calculate that the top scoring shot beat 9 out of 10, or 90%.
