I didn't stop working today until about sunset, so I just drove a few minutes, and used my new tripod to take a few long exposure pics at my fav lake. This is the one image of about 50 that's anything to see, and it isn't much since I was shooting birds at 1 sec. I got one other of the sunset, but may save it for a challenge.
Sharpen, size one time, post it.
Hi Terry! Let's see how your new E 500 works for you.
Good news from here, Fuji repair recieved and reshipped my backup S3 Pro in one day. I guess that they just reset the "Check Wallet" light that was coming on, and sent it back, no charge. It only took overnight for it to get back when I recieved the email that it was shipped. Go FedEx Woo Hoo! Now I can be a two fisted shooter, stereo vision LOL..
Yesterday, I also recieved a Bogen/ Manfrotto 3035 medium tripod with 3047 pan head that I snagged on eBay, like new @ $ 65. It was a great day.
Tomorrow and Sunday I may go camping and see if I can call up some wild turkeys or get a pic of a bear or panther. Can't wait. I may not return until the 11th. |

PS...thanks for letting me play! :)

Originally posted by KarenNfld: Roz this is just a side challenge, I don't think we all need to be doing the exact same thing. A lot of you will be doing 7 days of minimal and 7 days of editing, I'm not going to do that since I don't do a lot of editing on my photos anyway. When this was first brought up it was suggested that we following the minimal editing rules so that's what I'm doing.....that includes resizing, sharpening, rotating 90 or 180 degrees and changing to B&W if need be. |
thanx karen ... its interesting how different we all are re the editing thing .... i can hardly wait to edit coz that's where i fix up all my photographic blunders!!! ... and that's why i'm doing this minimal editing project .. 1. coz i usually cant leave a photograph in such a unadorned state!!! .. and 2. coz i'll learn more about my camera and getting it right, or as right as possible, before i get it into photoshop ...
so sharpen away folks ... i'll step down from my soapbox .. coz when you consider it, sharpening often just gets a photograph to mimic wot the eye sees anyway .. and edit wise, it not even the tip of the iceberg!! ..

photokariangel, In order for us to comment on your photos, you will need to post them by putting them into a portfolio, using the "my portfolio" link at the top of the DPC page. Then by using the post image link above the "Post Reply" box you can put them into the thread. There are others here who can give you better help with this, or you can read how to do it in the tutorials threads.
Good to have you along for the trip with this challenge. I am sure you will catch on quickly about posting pics.
Cool image that you posted. I don't think we are allowed to crop for this side challenge. : ) |

Resized and uploaded - no other editing. I'm open to post processing suggestions, but kinda like it the way it is! |

I just had a thought. I think what I will do this week is the minimal shots, next week edit them all in advanced, and then the week afterwards I would like to maybe choose 7 images from this thread to edit up. I could either choose or I would be willing to take the first 7 images from different photographers that would be interested in seeing my editing take on their shots. ANyone interested in that? |

I think this is a fabulous idea! I will follow suit - I can only commit to getting about 7 days in a row shooting, but always can find to play around with PS.

Kari doesn't have a blue shirt (she's a registered, not paid, member), so that means no portfolio. Any way we can let non-paids get comments? I think commenting in the thread will get way too busy. Anybody have any thoughts? I'd prefer this be inclusionary rather than exclusionary.

Day 2 - A leftover from my trip to the zoo yesterday. I am sticking with the DPC minimal ruleset for the first week. This was sharpened twice fullsize, resized and then sharpened once more. |

Day 2
Are we supposed to take these in RAW? I never thought about it and I did.
Which I really do need the experience because I didn't have RAW format with my old camera. But I won't if we're not supposed to! Oops! |

Well, in minimal editing, the rules say you have to shoot jpeg and this is kind of a practice for that ruleset (so we don't screw up when entering minimal editing challenges). However, if you are better in jpeg than you are in RAW(having it on your old cam), I don't mind if you practice using it and I am sure others won't as well :) |

I think that's a great idea. I really suffer sometimes in PP. I never tried it before I joined this site at the first of the year. I would really like to see what someone else could do with a photo of mine. |

I didn't even know what RAW was. I was like, OK I have RAW now. Now what the heck do I do with it. I've been playing around though and I think I have it down now so I'll just shoot them in JPG. |

How I understand the minimal editing rules, we can sharpen with a customizable sharpening tool - not USM. I've tried it on a few and it works ok.

NON-customizable sharpening tool - ie your only choice/setting is to apply or not. In Photoshop, that tool is "Sharpen". You can't set anything, like strength or radius or the like. Keep in mind this rule is for the minimal editing CHALLENGE rule set. I don't think it's a big deal for this project, but the point is to learn to try to get what you want from your camera to start with. Understand that DSLRs don't sharpen unless you tell it to shoot jpeg with some sharpening applied in camera. |
