Sharpened, sized 1 time, uploaded. No other edit.
Exposure was 1 second, and it was after sunset, nearly dark. Zoom @ 300mm. I was about 20 ft from her. The males are in mating plumage now, but this one is either young or female.

I love the bird's pose and the smoothness of the water. Great for being so close to nighttime!

Geez, 1 second! I agree with everyone else, that I can't believe the bird stood that still!

Very clear for one second and 300mm! I'd really love to see the colours shine through in your edit.

Excellent shot, especially under the conditions. Love how you've handled the lighting and the long exposure. Now, I hate that you can just "stop" on your way home from work and capture this kind of thing. Only even-semi-interesting things I could do that with are all stationary (so I can shoot them anytime). Now, for what xxrozxx said, let me just say: "You stunned him, just as he was wakin' up! Norwegian Blues stun easily." Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Did you do this handheld? If so, you've got a pretty steady grip! It will be very interesting to see the colors pulled out in post edit, and the degree to which it can be sharpened and still look natural. The background is very appealing and suits the bird well.

Wow - was that handheld for a second? At any rate, it's pretty darn good for a second on a living thing. I love the dark blue of the water - very pretty!

Well, that's explains the nature of the Great Blue Herron. It'll stand still for 1 second exposures! Just amazing. The focus is a little soft, but that's to be expected. Very nice shot. And, where's this camping trip to that you'll be seeing bears and such? Can I come?

A little soft in focus but with the shutter speed you used and the lens all the way out you did real well. I would have preferred him a little less centered but you could crop him that way in post editing.

What a beautiful shot. Wildlife at sundown, how lucky can you be.

I like the dark color of the water and the way it looks like it's moving.

That's a pretty amazing image considering it was a 1 second exposure. I love the color on it's beak.
