The Women's Forum is a good choice for seeing up the river and seeing Vista House on Crown Point. It's about a mile or two west of Crown Point.

Here is a shot looking at Crown Point from the Women's Forum:

For those interested in seeing what Vista House is build on, here it is from across the river. There are several nice views from the Washington side on Highway 14.

I have several things going on or I'd drop by. My wife wants to do a dog show in Camby. They are doing temperment testing and my wife gets a kick out of the "experts" that do temperment testing and likes to see what they say about her Bouvier service dog. A Bouvier is not your tipical service dog and we always get a kick out of how they don't know how to handle a non-standard Golden or Lab or service dog like that. You have to be a dog person to understand, but it beats cutting the grass. :D

Yea, I pulled it up on MapQuest and it is about 35 or so miles east of Ainsworth/Benson. I think I will take my chances with Ainsworth as it centralized. If worse comes to worse, I am only bringing my backpack tent so I can pitch it in a flash along the road somewhere...heehee...

And thank you very much Steve for the compliments on my Landscapes, it is very much appriciated especially coming from someone of your caliber...

Don't know if you resolved your camping issue but be advised that Viento is quite a bit further east from Benson than Ainsworth. Viento is almost all the way to Hood River on the east side of the Gorge.

And the early AM part of the GTG would start on the WEST side of the Gorge east from Troutdale on the scenic highway, probably beginning at the Women's Forum Overlook.

Edit:
Oh, btw, GREAT landscapes in your portfolio!

Ya'll might want to bring some suntan lotion. It was 94 degrees on my front porch a few hours ago.

The weather was very nice this morning. I took the day off and went fishing with some friends. I caught a beautiful 32" steelhead at the end of the morning tide. It was a good day.

Hey Mick,

did you catch it in the rivers or was it still ocean bound? Congrats by the way

I just checked the NOAA website and Saturday, east Portland, is forcast for 87...probably be warmer even further east. Thanks for the sun tip, I don't ever think of that this time of year...

The gorge is generally cooler - at the very least because of the fairly constant east wind.

We were fishing for Chinook at Prescott Beach on the Columbia River.

I believe the melting point for most Oregonians is around 72 degrees. :)

Seriously, 87 degrees shouldn't be too bad, especially with a nice breeze. The early AM might be a little chilly for some people.

I think you about nailed it with the 72 degrees. Anything over 65 and I start feeling the heat.

Unless there are serious objections I'm gonna assume 5AM at Women's Forum Overlook for early AM photography.

If anyone needs to know how to get there you can PM me.

Not sure how good the cell service in the Gorge is but I'll send anyone that wants my number so that you can try to link up with whoever is on the early AM group if you are gonna be a bit later than 5AM. :)

Hmmmmm... maybe I should inform fas-ligand about that 5AM thing since he and I are going together and will have to leave before 4. LOL!!!

Are you bringing a GPS this time though? Sorry, couldn't resist that...heehee...Forum Overlook is fine with me, as well as 5AM...

I would like this very much (getting up early and so on).

I will not have internet access after tomorrow morning, so I'll need to know by then where we're meeting. My daughter and I will be camping at Ainsworth State Park, arriving sometime Friday in the afternoon.

The Oregon State Parks says: "Corbett Exit 22 (East) is closed for the next three months. Crown Point and Vista House are still accessible via Exit 18 and Exit 28. Look for the detour signs along Interstate 84." Is this a problem?

Is anyone else camping in the area? At Ainsworth?

We're tenting. From their webpage, they have 45 full sites, and 6 primitives. I'm planning to camp at one of the full sites, so I can drive my car up to where we're at.

I don't know how much of a problem it will be as far as first-come first-serve, but since they do not take reservations there's not much else to do. If we get there early (3-5 pm) I doubt it should be much of a problem.

Does anyone know where this Women's Overlook is in relation to Ainsworth?

Thanks Ursula...I am taking Friday off, going to drive down early and scope the place out, get my barrings and explore some after I settle in a camp site.... Your going down tomorrow right?

I'll look forward to meeting you. I have not heard from Ursula but think she will meet there to. If you are at Ainsworth Friday night you will probably see her.

Btw... only wimps need directions. LOL!!!!

A couple miles? west on the old highway 30. Just past Vista House when you look at the map.

edit: ok, maybe a few more than a couple of miles.

It's probably fastest to get back on the I-84 heading west (toward Portland). Get off at Exit 22 (Corbett). There is only one way to go (which is across the freeway and up the hill). Go all the way up the hill until the road ends in a little triangle where you can go right or left. Take a left (east). It is about 1.5 miles down the road and will be on your left. If you get to the Vista House, you've gone probably a mile too far.

Ursula expect a PM from stdavidson with directions/distance to the 5am thing. Also I'm thinking about maybe doing the camping thing too since my mom is staying at my house Friday night to watch my son for me. Haven't decided yet though.

Wheres the closest coffee place to there? If there's nothing nearby who's bringing the thermos?

I am bringing a thermos, but cannot guarantee the quality of the coffee at that time of morn as I will be camping and resolving either to instant or army style coffee...

I'm staying in Troutdale and I'm not sure if even that little town has anything open that early. I thought you only got up that early to milk the cows?

Haha, as ubiquitous as Starbucks is...there is nothing close to this place. Pack your own caffeine.

Actually, no. Tomorrow we're going elsewhere. We'll be at Ainsworth Friday afternoon :)
