The first part of June is the Portland Rose Festival... the first weekend is the Starlight Parade, Tall Ships and a bunch of other things. The second weekend (9th/10th) is the Grand Foral Parage, Dragon Boat races and a bunch of other stuff.

For waterfalls, Silverfalls just East of Salem are pretty good with one trail (about 5 miles long) that takes you past 10 waterfalls. Or you can drive to the South end and take pictures of the falls there and then drive around to the North end and take pictures of the falls there. Got to watch out for those rampaging Chipmunks though. They think they own the trails and park area. :D

So now it is just narrowing it down to one date and one location.

I was one-a the first to respond. How rude. :p

Maybe.

I have no idea yet what my schedule will be at that time. But I'm definitely aiming to get more into photography again this summer, so I'd like to keep possibilities like this on my radar. :)

I'm always a tentative "yes" depending on what the weekend holds three days in advance...

Now that I've forded the Oneonta Gorge, I think it would be big fun to do it with others as a side trip.

What did we decide we were doing anyway?

We decided that we're going to build a raft and have you ford Oneonta Gorge while pulling us along on the raft.

You better eat your Wheaties that morning. ;)

OK, but you guys get to carry the raft over the logjam.

Thanks for getting the ball rolling, Thomas. =)

I like the idea of Multnomah Falls/however many of the others along that route we can squeeze in.

Annnnd June 9th, I think, actually works better for me. =)

Falls are always a good idea.

Other similar ideas would be Mt. Hood, etc.

Well, that depends...

Short story:
A few weeks ago a bunch of us hiked up to some falls in Washington to take photos. The falls were about 70-80 feet high. I never got the name of the falls or the stream. Anyway, the trail took us to an overlook spot above the falls. There was a vertical drop to the bottom and the ground below, covered in large jagged rocks and boulders. Just before we got to the cliff overlooking the falls one of the women in the group let her little dog off its leash. The dog was all excited and ran ahead of us, past the first few that were already looking over the edge. One of the other girls tried to stop the dog, but it was too intent on running ahead of everyone. When it got to the edge it didn't even slow down. It jumped... all the way to the bottom.

We were all stunned. I fully expected to see splattered doggy when we look over the edge. Instead, we see a little doggy head sticking out of a pile of leaf litter between large rocks. It was looking up at us with a slightly stunned expression of its own.

The woman's son knew of a way down and made his way down to the dog.

The dog was a little shaky, but didn't have a single scratch.

Apparently, it's a very lucky doggy.

Hey sounds fun,

Just an option, we have a house in Rockaway Oregon, could sleep everyone listed comfortably. Centrally located 30 mins south of Haystack and 40 mins north of Cape Kiwanda. If we wanted to do a sleepover slumber pajama party.

Just an idea....

I really like all the ideas so far and hope I can make this GTG! Right now I'm in Washington after the long trip over the ocean and really loving springtime here. I have some cousins who've invited me on a road trip with their 3 little kids to Disneyland from around May 31 until middle of June though, so I won't be able to make the earlier dates in June unfortunately. If it gets scheduled for the 16th or weekend after, I'm pretty sure I can be there.

This internet connection at my mother's is really slow dial-up, so I'm not online too much lately. I'll mark this thread to watch, but feel free to PM me in case of major developments or even other GTGs in the Northwest.

It seems like the general consensus is to do a waterfalls deal. One of the falls in the Multnomah Falls area (I'd rather not do that actual Multnomah Falls since it is so tourized).
Would people be up to a hike photoshoot? Like Horsetail falls?\

The date is still tentative.

2nd is good for me, as is just about any location. Falls are good, hike is good.

For those that haven't been to any of the Gorge Falls, or climbed up the trail from Horsetail Falls to Pony Tail Falls... if you are not in that great of shape, that first 800 feet or so from the road is fairly steep. I made the mistake of going with a couple of mountain climbers (one that did extensive climbing in the Colorado Rockies), which I wasn't aware of when we started but it didn't take long to find out as they just chugged on up the trail chatting away with loss of breath while I'm starting to look for my oxygen tank. LOL! Half way up I finally just waved them on and told them I'd catch up with them at the top. It levels off pretty good once you get up the first 800 feet (almost all of the trails along the Gorge start with a very steep 600 to 1000 foot climb) and I was fine after that. Pony Tail falls is not that far from the first crest and is a nice falls. A little difficult to shoot (unless you do like these two did and dive over the bank and get in the stream below the falls to shoot straight on). The trail goes behind the falls and back up the other side. I forget how far it is, but there is another falls up the trail that you have to go down a steep trail to get to and there is suppose to be a nice wooden bridge there. We didn't make it down because it had rained recently and the trail was solid slick mud and there were several people that almost didn't make it up the trail coming our way. One guy had to actually take his shoes off so he could get a better grip in the mud to help a woman up the trail. We turned around rather than try to get our 30 pound packs and us down the mud and back up without losing it over the side.

And to be honest, a number of falls along the Gorge are much nicer than the Horsetail Falls group. Eagle Creek is nice although I hate that log in front of Punch Bowl Falls. But Punch Bowl is much better when the water is lower so you can get out on the rock bar and get some good angles on the falls. When the water is up, it covers the rock area and you have to get wet to get the same angles.

Just a few thoughts to throw out.

I've never been to Pony Tail Falls, but Horsetail is far from my favorite fall to shoot. I do like the idea of Punchbowl as I've never been and want to go.

When I get home and fix my firewall (I accidentally blocked access to my entire site, d'oh), I've got some (bad, 2MP P&S) photos from the punch bowl from a couple years ago.

Edit: That climb is a _bitch_.

On the I-84 off of exit 41. That's about 10 miles east of Multnomah.

Darn it, just noticed the GTG. We have softball tourney's every weekend through July. Looks like I'm going to miss another one. I'll follow the thread, I might get lucky and show up......Ace

I would rather meet somewhere that doesn’t require a long and difficult hike. Becky had both knees operated on recently and it would be hard on her. Some of the other folks might have difficulty with a long hike too. Besides, I’d rather go to a place that has more photo opportunities than a single waterfall would provide.

Hey Joe, just bring the team with you. We can use them to carry our gear. :)
