As everyone has pretty much covered Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, the Matrix, etc.

Here are some potential future favorites:

- Pirates of the Carribbean (we'll see how the third one goes)

- Nochnoi Dozer "Night Watch" (first one is rather interesting thriller, we'll see how 2 & 3 are)

- Ice Age (come on...they gotta do another sequel)

I almost listed Toy Story, but since Disney will be doing 3 instead of Pixar. I don't think it'll be a great trilogy.

Now addressing legacies:

- Harry Potter (this has been a great one)

- Chronicles of Narnia (good potential)

- Star Trek (hey, so we know the odd ones always suck)

good choice on Bourne Trilogy. Very very clever. Those movies singlehandedly converted me from a Matt Damon hater, to a "that dude isn't so bad afterall, I think I will like him in future films". And that would have been impossible if not for those exact movies, because i thought he was a tool. He might still be, but not in my fantasy film world.

I thought the same but it really wasn't Damon that won me over. It was the guy directing. I forget his name but watching the behind the scenes was as good as the movie.

Funny, nobody has mentioned Friday the 13th. OK, so it's more than a trilogy but still. No one? Heheh.

I don't think any more than the first two -- also done in conjunction with The Mouse. Part of the recent deal involves Pixar remaining creatively independent -- if anything, Pixar will probably be running the whole Disney animation department (whatever's left after the recent purge).

I love Miyazaki's work too, but no trilogies there.

couldn't agree more, except not trilogy. while we are on the subject of kick ass Japanese movies, anyone Ghost in the Shell: Innocence. Or as I say in my fluent Japanese (kidding, simply working on it):
Inosensu: Kôkaku kidôtai. My top 10 favs of all time. So beautiful, original, haunting...And that theme song, still haunts me, which reminds of me of my favorite overture to any movie and that is the Dr. Zhivago theme, anyone anyone? hmmmmm.

How about the Musashi samurai trilogy ... I don't remember the names of the the individual movies.

Any other Oscar-winners in this list? Rocky?

Musashi Miyamoto (Part One)

Movie Description

Young Miyamoto (Mifune) dreams of becoming a heroic warrior in the midst of battle. When civil war grips the land, however, he finds himself becoming fighting on the wrong side and is forced to become a fugitive. Later, when he meets a caring woman and a priest who puts him on the path of the samurai, Miyamoto begins to turn his life around. Academy Award (Honorary): Best Foreign Language Film first released in the United States during 1955.

Credits
Cast: Toshirô Mifune
Director: Hiroshi Inagaki
Producer: Kazuo Takimura

Synopsis
Based on Eiji Yoshikawa's book MUSASHI MIYAMOTO, chronicling the life of the 17th century warrior of the same name, Inagaki's film version (in three parts) is an engrossing tale of a young man's turbulent journey through old-world Japan. Mifune (in a role similar to that he would play in THE SEVEN SAMURAI) is Miyamoto, the young man who dreams of battle, yet finds himself on the wrong side of a civil war. His chance at redemption comes from a loving woman and a wise priest who puts him on the path to enlightenment...and the way of the samurai.

For a trilogy, to be good, ALL THREE movies have to be good. It's so rare for a Hollywood sequel to be good, never mind TWO sequels. Unfortunately, I've never seen any of the foreign/independent trilogies listed. Which means I've never seen a GOOD trilogy, never mind the best trilogy.

I mean come on... Godfather 3? Return of the Jedi?? When happy Darth and the Ewoks wave happy bye-bye at the end??

I have to agree with you Cutter...

LOTR leaves them all in the dust - WAAAAY back in the dust.

That being said, it would have to be:
2. Die Hard
3. Back to the Future
4. Raiders
5. Matrix

:-)
